Chapter 10

"We have a new job," Tobias said as he poked my back. I got up and made my way to Tyre's office.
    My eyes followed the moldy ceiling and the floorboards creaked, the years of humid air having taken its toll on the tavern. Next to Tyre stood Mel and I couldn’t help but notice that Tyre had two packs rather than just one. Whatever this new job is she was going on. I didn't like that. She showed her true colors to me and me only and that made me uneasy. I didn’t want to be around her for longer than I had to
I looked over at Tobias. My own reluctance was a stark contrast to his obvious excitement that Mel would be going with us. I simply rolled my eyes, Tobias was quite possibly the stupidest person that I knew.
“Tyre,” I began, “why does she have to come?” I did my best to keep the resentment out of my voice but still, it came through.
“Yes, she happens to be my wife,” the anger was barely hidden in his voice and he flashed me a warning in his eyes.
I didn’t heed the warning but instead spoke on, “She’ll put us all in jeopardy, you saw what happened yesterday! She’s stupid, clearly,''I knew that wasn’t true, she might actually be one of the smartest people I knew but no one else seemed to see right through her as i did so I would have to play my cards right. I had to find a reason for her not to come.  ''We can’t have you taking her with you just because you bought her!” My indignation was clear.
“She’s coming with us, end of story,” Tyre said with a finality that I know I couldn’t argue with.
Tobias had a smug grin on his face as if he had won an argument, which unfortunately for my pride, he did. All I could do is shoot him my coldest glare.
'' Okay, so whats the job honey.'' Mel suddenly spoke up trying to clear the air from all this tension.
''Its a job in the capital.'' Tyre beamed with pride as if to say look guys we made it. We used to run jobs in the back alleys of casinos in the middle of nowhere, and finally, we are getting the recognition we deserve. I simply rolled my eyes but to my surprise so did Mel. she seemed to be just as good as me in reading this fool.
''It’s in Governor Conthri's estate, we are to kill him and have free range over his treasury that is located in the master bedroom. As simple as that.'' he smiled widely as if to comfort us but his smile was anything but. He had about ten teeth in total and half of them here cooper which was now turning turquoise.
'' That’s it, stop simplifying it Tyre, we have to take a five-day journey to reach Proleum. With Tobias might I add, which I’m sure I cant handle.''I put my hand up to silence any objection Tobias currently had. '' Then we have to sneak into one of the most guarded governor estates with Mel might I add. And finally, kill the Governor and break into his vault for our pay. Does that sound easy Tyre.''I looked at him and Tobias and wondered how have i survived working for him for so long.
'' I still know how to plan heist Nai.'' he said in a low tone and his eyes looked like a lions. His glare confused me, he was used to me opposing his every move. Suddenly the thought hit me he didn't like to be contradicted in front of Mel. i could only laugh internally at his foolishness and need for being seen as the boss.
'' Then what is your great plan.''I huffed.
'' In five days time they will be having a ball to commemorate Conthri's ninty-fifth birthday, security will be focused on the guests and ballroom and that’s when we break in.''I was a little taken aback by the fact he actually planned something. It was usually me who ended up doing everything around here.
'' How do you know that.'' Tobias asked, it was clear that like me he too didn’t expect this from Tyre. not even this, the bare minimum.
'' Our employer happened to inform me.''
'' And who is that.'' i asked
'' i dun know, al i know is he’s being opposed politically by Conthri.''
''And who isn’t. That man has opposed even the dead king'' Mel said with a laugh. This time it was Tyre's turn to be surprised. He probably didn’t expect her to know an politics. But he had to be naive because everyone knows the most political job of all is in the whorehouse. Mel saw the shocked look Tyre and Tobias was giving her so she spoke up, while doing that she shrunk herself away and tried to look like that innocent girl everyone thinks she is.
'' A lot of my old clients were politicians so I heard a lot.'' she said sweetly adding a gentle smile. That seemed to be a good enough answer to the lot of them.
''Pack up you two and get to the stables we leave now if we want to make it to the ball.''
I went t my room to pack my things but in the whole while I couldn’t get rid of my gut-wrenching feeling that this heist was a bad idea.
