McCallister
I had called Herrera into my office.
"Chief McCallister."
"It is nice to finally meet you, Andrea. I've heard rumors of Captain Pruitt Herrera's daughter. This great Hero. I didn't believe them until the call yesterday."
"The Delgado boy?"
"Yeah. Please sit."
"And people call me "Andy" or "Herrera." The only person who ever called me "Andrea" is now dead."
"It's a huge loss for the SFD. Losing Pruitt Herrera. I don't think Dixon expressed that. Expressed how important he really was."
"I know."
Andy sat down in one of the chairs in front of my desk.
"So, Captain Bishop wanted to put the boy in Engine 19 so you slapped her?"
"Okay. In my defense, my father used to do it to me when I started thinking irrationally."
"And you ran 20 miles in five minutes with the boy?"
"Yes. If you'll pull my father's file, you'll see he's done it before."
"It was with you, wasn't it? That's how you knew the quickest route on foot?"
"Yeah. Please don't judge any of the Firefighters back then. That'd include Captain Lawrence, Snuffy Souza, and Charlie Irwin."
"I don't care what they did 20 years ago."
"Okay."
"Okay. You don't have to worry about Lawrence, Souza, or Irwin being implicated for past offenses that nobody can verify."
"Okay."
"Would you be willing to compete with Bishop for Captain?"
"I can't do that. Maya is my best friend. I can't betray her like that."
"Is it worth me demoting her instead?"
"My husband will have to take orders from me."
"I know."
"He's not gonna like that. And what the hell happens if I get pregnant?"
"Montgomery takes over for the first six months of the baby's life. So, Sullivan and you can spend it with him or her."
"Fine."
