Bang! I snapped awake. Warning buzzers were going off, and I was aware of the chopper spinning. The pilot seat was empty. I rushed to the controls and grabbed the stick. I had no idea how to really fly a chopper but I knew common sense. I pulled back on the stick and pushed the pedal opposite of our spin. We slowed spinning and moved backwards. I flicked a switch under the altimeter and eased the stick forward. We gained some altitude and leveled off. I breathed a sigh of relief. "Ellis! You're a mechanic . You think you can do this?" Ellis nodded, a bit shaken. He stepped over a body, face down, clothed in pilot gear. I moved to the other seat and held us steady while he sat down. With Ellis at the wheel, I could assess the surrounding area. There was a large concrete wall with people moving frantically. Some had lit signals trying to wave us down. Ellis got on the radio. "Hello? This is the chopper that almost crashed. Our pilot was infected. We managed to get control. Six survivors and one having special needs. Requesting permission to land." There was silence for a solid minute. Cara put her hand on my shoulder and gave me a worried look. The radio finally responded. "Uhh...copy that...you can touch down at the helipad behind this wall. You really gave us a scare."
Within two minutes we were on the ground.
