"We have been watching over you your entire life, making sure you were, safe,” The blond continues. The other girl noticeably flinches at her friend’s choice of words.  I have to pinch myself to keep from snickering.

I don’t know how these girls found me, but I do know one thing, they are completely insane.  I need to get as far away from them as possible, they are going to get me caught.  I slide down and out of the tree, nearly rolling my ankle, and stand straight in front of the girls.

“I don’t know who you are, or where you came from, but I think you’re crazy and that you need to go away,” I state, watching as shocked looks cross their faces, “and if you don’t mind, I’m going to leave now.”  I start walking east, heading away from the small amount of light coming from the nearly set sun.    A thought comes to my mind as I listen to the crunching of my feet.  I turn back towards the two girls, who stand frozen in their spots.

“Oh, and, don’t follow me.”  I turn and pick my feet up in a jog, cursing the two girls out for pushing me on in the dark as I trip over a tree root.  When I feel like I’m a safe distance from the two strangers I slow down to a walk again.

What loonies, they must be crazy or something.  I know for sure that I’ve never seen either of them in my life.  Guardian angels?  Those only exist in fairytales and dreams.

My eyes slowly adjust to the darkness, and I sigh in content, actually preferring night  travel over day.  A small rodent skitters in and out of my vision and an owl of some sort hoots from up above.

Suddenly, with a small flash, much like the one from earlier, the two girls appear in front of me once more.  I literally jump a half a foot in the air out of fright, landing a lot more to the right than I was standing.  There is another snap and the next thing I know, the world is turned upside down and the rough skin of a rope is pressing into my ankle.  A hunters trap.  Great, just great.

Wiggling around as I try to reach my pocket knife, which clattered to the ground moments after my direction change, I keep my eyes on the two girls.  Now I’m sure I must be hallucinating.  But then again, they aren’t the ones hanging from a tree.

My mind is racing as I try to take in the situation.  They couldn’t have been lying earlier, especially if they just appeared in front of me.  Last time I checked, normal people can’t just teleport.

The girl with the blond hair giggles, breaking me from my thoughts.  I feel my cheeks flush red and increase my effort, stretching to get my knife.  My wiggle turns into a swing, and soon I give up as I nearly hit the tree trunk.

The black haired girl sighs, punching her friend lightly in the arm and stepping towards me.  I can hear my mind telling me to get away from her, without registering that I can’t actually get away, and I try to shuffle away.

“Oh just stop moving will you?” She mumbles, grasping my ankle with incredible strength for her size and slipping the rope back over my ankle.  I drop to the ground and scramble away, trying to ignore the searing pain in my ankle.

“We aren’t lying to you, you know” The blond pipes up, swiping hair out of her face.  “We truly are your guardians, and we just want to help.”  When I don’t respond, she walks up to me and grasps my ankle before I can move.

I feel instant relief, like cold water replacing the searing pain.  I flick my eyes up to the girl, not sure what to think.   I try to speak, but there seems to be something blocking throat.  I cough, once, twice, and try again.

“Who are you people?” I proclaim, pulling my legs to my body and leaning back against the tree, just incase I have to run again.

“Like I said earlier,” The blond bubbles out, her voice like crystals, “my name is Katherine, and this is Evelyn, and we are your guardians. W-”  Her partner, Evelyn, snorts and just places a hand over her friend’s mouth, cutting her next sentence off.

“Excuse Kate,” She remarks, glancing at the blond girl, Kate, with an amused face, “and call me Eve.”  She releases her friend and sits down in front of me, looking like she is trying to figure out how to say something.

“How would I explain this to you?” She mutters, before looking at me again, and in a louder, more direct voice, begins, “Lets just say that Kate and I have realms in the universe, ones that overlap Earth, and they border each other, making us co-guardians of this particular area, Earth that is.

“Thousands of years ago, we received a prophecy saying that a teenage girl from Earth, you, were to become our apprentice and help oversee our ideas and decisions.  She, you that is, is to be true of heart and strong of will.  It states that you will have seen more cruelty and pain than those of triple your age, and will have an understanding of the life you need to live to help others.

“I know this is a lot to put on you, but you are that girl, even if you don’t see it, and we want you to come back to the realms with us and begin you training.”

I stand, my legs working on their own, and stare shell-shocked at Eve, barely registering the soft hand that Kate places on my arm.  My mouth opens and closes like a fish’s, and I struggle to say something, but my mind seems too overloaded to function.  With the feeling of both girl’s eyes on me, I stammer out the first thing that comes to mind.

“A- are you immortal?”  Kate bursts into laughter while Eve just smiles.

“Yes, and you will be too when you complete your training.” Eve replies, continuing to smile kindly at me.  I feel confused, and afraid to accept that this may actually be real.  I pinch my arm, looking around once more.  My surroundings stay the same, and my mind screams at me to just accept it.  I can still feel the cool sensation in my ankle, and I look back up, my eyes flickering between the two girls.

“Can I still go find my mother?” I ask, hope flickering through me.  Maybe I can get to my mom, and reconnect with my brother.  They share a look, the smiles gone from their faces.

“Alex, your mother was killed by beings called shadows, not long after you were taken from her.” Kate mumbles, her bell-like voice tinkling down an octave.  My knees collapse beneath me, and I slump to the forest floor.

My mother’s dead.
