Sweat rushes down my face, slightly blinding me before I get the chance to wipe it away. My momentary distraction earns me a punch to my stomach. I cannot breath for a good half a minute. Luckily for me, the boy that I am fighting has an extremely cocky side, that needs to be rewarded with cheers quite often. I recover while he is busy with his ‘admirers’ and wait for him to turn around before attacking him with another punch to the face.
He bends over a few feet away to clutch his cheek and I take the time to look around us. Many more kids have caught a whiff of our fight and are now helping form a human cage around us. My hands are welded into fists and I wipe some blood off of them, hoping it isn’t mine.
He yells and charges at me again, snapping my attention back to the present. It’s as if all of his energy has been sipped out of him, he is moving so slowly that I easily side-step his attempt to topple me, sending him sprawling to the dirt. I snicker into my hand and wipe away some hair plastered to my face.
He looks exhausted, blood running from his nose and his hair soaked with sweat, and for some reason, I feel the exact opposite. With each burning step I take, more adrenaline and control pumps through my system.
His buddies are no longer smiling, their worried eyes are fixed to me. Half the crowd has their hands to their mouths or eyes, while the other half keeps glancing nervously at the school.
When he finally stands up again, turning around with unfocused eyes, I punch him in the jaw, knocking him over again and seemingly ending the fight, just as a teacher comes to shoo away the crowd that surrounds us.
My adrenaline quickly disappears, leaving me achy and sore all over. I have to pry my numb hands open to feel my face, which is equally feelingless. They come away bloody and I wonder what is bleeding. My attention snaps to the teacher as he starts yelling out detentions to the people who hang around the remains of our fight. My heart drops into my stomach when I realize it’s the principle.
"What is going on here!" He yells when he sees the boy and I, his eyes flickering between the two of us. I bite my lip to keep from cursing and spin around, kicking the dirt with the tip of my shoe.
I close my eyes and lean my head back, taking in a big breath of fresh air which doesn’t seem to reach my lungs. I can feel the waves of anger and disappointment rushing from him, and I spin around to face him.
"Alexandria, care to explain yourself?” He seethes, his eyes boring into mine with a feverish glint.
"Not really,” I retort, barely keeping the panic out of my voice. I try to look as nonchalant as possible until his gaze releases me. He gives me one last disappointed glare and moves his gaze down to the boy, who was still sitting on the ground, trying to inch away from us undetected.
"Bill, do you care to explain your bloody nose?" He states impatiently. The boy, who I now know as Bill looks almost afraid for a moment, then recovers himself and plasters a smirk onto his bloody face.
"Nah I agree with stupid over here," He says simply. My anger from earlier rushes back and I turn to face him so that I can give him a good kick to the side, but the principle must have seen it coming, grabbing my arm and yanking me sharply to the right. I shoot Bill a glare that I wish could kill.
