Chapter 5

I open my eyes to see stars above me. I have never seen the stars so bright or close. It’s almost as if I can reach out and touch them. I reach my hand up but all I grab is darkness. Darkness. Everything is dark, almost too dark.

“Where am I?”

I look around but all there is is darkness and the stars. Is this death?

“No, you are not dead little one.”

“What! Show yourself!”

“Easy little one. I cannot show myself because I have no form. I am the darkness, a shadow in the night.”

So you are a demon.

“I am not a demon!”

“How are you reading my mind?”

“Things in this place work differently.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is but it’s not the answer you were looking for. In time you will understand who I am.”

“Okay. Where am I?”

“You are everywhere and nowhere. As for your next question, no I do not rule this place. I only come here when you call for me otherwise I try to avoid this place.”

“I am in the void! How?”

“Right you are little one. You are darkness and the void is just an extension of that darkness. Your abilities have been fully awakened yet again but your memories are still locked. Here you are able to be wherever and watch the world but be warned if you are here too long or show vulnerability the void shadows will possess your body. This will kill you, leaving your soul to wander the void for eternity until you become a demon. However you are able to enter the void in your mortal body which is safer. You can pull the fabric of the world apart, opening a portal to the void. This will allow you to step into the void in your mortal body and return to a location of your choosing. This is known as shadow-stepping and it is vital that you master this ability.”

“So it’s like teleportation.”

“In a sense, yes.”

“Wait what do you mean by my memories being locked? I remember everything from my childhood.”

“In time you will find the answers you are searching for but know this. Some things are not what they appear to be.”

“What is that supposed to mean!?”

“Hush little one, no more questions. Instead let's talk about that familiar of yours.”

“Don’t tell me that little half-bred became my familiar.”

“Leon is more than a half-bred. He is like you in more ways than one.”

“He has abilities like mine?”

“More or less.”

SKREEEE!!!!

“We have run out of time, the void shadows have caught a whiff of us. Know this Rose, Leon can be trusted. He is on your side.”

“Wait!” but it was too late, the light had already engulfed me, sending me back but back to where?

The light finally began to fade and I slowly opened my eyes. There were birds above me chirping and I was standing underneath the peach tree, but the tree was blossoming. This wasn’t correct, it was the middle of fall not spring. I went to Cole’s house to see if he could explain why it’s spring but when I got there the house was gone. What’s going on? I saw someone working on their garden next to where his house was supposed to be.
