The rest of maths was pretty boring, we just went over some tests we did last week (96% whoop whoop!) I liked Mel , she was really nice and kind of crazy like me and Ashley so I think she would fit in with us no questions asked just one more thing to check though… “ So Mel, you’re a bit of a potterhead right?”
“Yeah I guess I am a bit randomized” I grinned and said
“Well so are we so you’ll fit in with us just right if you like”
“Yep sounds cool to me”
“But just one more thing before you start hanging out with us” she raised her eyebrows
“What do you mean?”
“Oh god, everyone put your fingers in your ears if you don’t want to go prematurely deaf.” Ashley muttered clapping her hands over her ears. I ignored her.
“CAKE OR DEATH?!” I hollered. Mel and Jamie just about jumped through the roof and Ashley just rolled her eyes. Everyone looked at me
“Oops” I mouthed the teacher’s head snapped up from his work and said “Miss Bennit! I don’t think shouting in the classroom is really necessary is it?”
“No sir” I answered still giggling
“Shouting in my classroom is like putting the middle finger up at me. Don’t.” I snorted, man he came out with some trash! He went back to his work and I nodded to Mel waiting for an answer.
“Umm cake?” she said in an unsure voice
“Congratulations!”
“You’re scaring her Charlie” Ashley laughed shaking her head
“Pack up! Lesson’s finished” Mr Johnston called the class leapt for the door as the bell rang. I picked up my bag and the others followed me we all dumped our papers on the teacher’s desk and I made to leave but Ash grabbed my arm. “Wait! Is Austin or Nicky outside?”
“Yeah Austin’s outside why?”
“We weren’t allowed to leave if one of them isn’t outside to meet us”
“What? Why? That’s the first I’ve heard of it”
“I don’t know Nicky wouldn’t tell me”
“Hm” I said in a disapproving voice, I didn’t appreciate being treated like a little kid. We all vanished through the door and it slammed behind us.
“Hey hun” Austin smiled at me
“Heyy” I took his hand as we headed for the canteen
“This is Mel” I introduced Austin to her
“Hi there Mel, I’m Austin” he smiled at her
“Hiya Austin” she smiled back
“Heading for the canteen? I’m really hungry today”
“Yep”
“Where’s Nick?” Ashley asked him, she looked worried but Jamie, who had been following behind us, answered before Austin could.
“Oh he’s probably with his posse of creeps” she frowned at Jamie but otherwise ignored him. Austin frowned at Jamie aswell, he obviously disapproved of him. “He will meet us in the canteen; he had a few errands to run”. Jamie snorted disbelievingly
“What is up with you today? Your being a jerk” Ashley told him in irritation.
“Nothing “he muttered scowling. I looked away from them, Jamie and Ashley still bickering. Mel caught up with me and said “Do they always argue like this?”
“Not usually but they do if Jamie makes a remark about Nicky, it really gets to her which is fair enough”
“Who’s Nicky?”
“Ash’s boyfriend but Jamie hates him”
“Because he goes out with Ash?”
“I don’t think so; according to Nicky they’ve always hated each other even before we moved here”
“Oh, but they hate each other more now?”
“Yes because they have to be in close proximity, Jamie is friends with us and Nicky’s almost always with Ash sooo…”
“Sounds pretty awkward”
“Yeah, you’ll get used to it don’t worry” we entered the canteen and passed a group of about ten people mostly girls.
“Who are they? “Mel asked nodding to them
“The populars”Austin answered, as we passed a couple of the girls winked at Austin staring at him. He spared them a cold glance before wrapping his arm around my shoulder’s as we swept passed. “Ashley!” a girl from the group shouted across the canteen. Kelsey Palin flicked her long blonde hair over one shoulder and flashed her blinding white teeth in a mocking smile. “What” she answered obviously uninterested in what she had to say. Couldn’t say I blamed her. “Where’s Nicky?” she’s had a crush on him for 2 years and has been turned down more times than I can remember HE’S NOT INTERSTED! BONJOUR!!!
“Mind your own business” She snapped, turning away and starting to walk off towards me and Austin.
“We had a bet of how long until he switches to me” she shrieked across the canteen but the only recognition Ash gave of hearing her screamed comment was a hand-gesture. We continued to our usual table in the corner, just across from the gang. As I glanced at them Jono winked at us, I smiled back at him. I didn’t mind Jono, he was a bit sleazy but he never did anything to hurt us so I didn’t see any reason to hate him. “Nick! Thought you’d crashed or something bro” Ashley turned at once and so did I. he pulled up a chair between me and Ashley and sat on it backwards so he could lay his arm over the back of it, resting his chin on his elbow. He took Ash’s hand with his free hand and rested their hands on his knee. “Where were you?” I asked him though to no avail. He just shook his head “nowhere, I just had some stuff to do that couldn’t wait”
“Oh okay” I said, I wasn’t fooled for a second and neither was Ashley judging by the way she narrowed her eyes but I wasn’t going to press him about it in front of Jamie and Mel.
“Oh by the way, Mel this is Nicky” I introduced them
“Hey” Mel grinned at him, waving across the table
“Hello” Nicky replied quietly, inclining his head in her direction politely.
“Did I do something wrong?” Mel whispered in my ear
“No, he’s just a bit shy that’s all. He’s always like it with new people”
“So it’s not because he doesn’t like me?” she sounded worried. I deliberated for a moment before answering.
“No” I finally said “if he didn’t like you than you would know about it, he isn’t exactly subtle about it” I couldn’t help smiling slightly and the icy glare he shot at the popular’s.
