Prologue
He was sat on the park bench, his head drooping with a glass bottle clutched in his grasp. He was sobbing, taking deep shuddering breaths as he did so. He pulled out an old faded photograph from his back pocket and glanced at it, his eyes softening momentarily, looking up at the heavens whispering brokenly. “K-Katie, I don’t know what to do, I don’t even know who I am anymore. Dan wants me to watch Austin and Nick, I don’t want to but he promised he’d give me some stuff to take so I can see you again. Katie I m-miss you s-so much. I-“He choked up; his eyes were red and watering, taking a lengthy swig from the bottle which was no doubt straight liquor. He cringed at the taste, gagging a little. “TOBY!!” shouted a grating cruel voice. A tall man with dusty blond hair slithered out of the black night “ I thought I told you to keep an eye on Austin and Nick , how are you supposed to do that while you’re sitting here snivelling like a little girl?!” his dark eyes scrutinized Toby , burning with anger . he laid a hand on the gun in his belt as though to emphasise his point. Toby slurred something incoherent and tucked the crumpled photo back into his pocket, taking a last forced gulp from the bottles contents he threw it from him where it shattered into a million diamonds on the footpath. Toby stuffed his hands into his jeans pockets and as he did so, he glanced up one last time at the stars “I’m sorry” he whispered his eyes brimming with tears “ Go! Now! I’ll meet you and the guys at the school entrance tomorrow go and tell them and you’d better not be like this when I see you again” the tall man shouted again, this time withdrawing the gun threateningly. Toby stumbled away down the road. He didn’t look up again.
