THE ERA OF SCHADENFREUDE

According to the old records, it has been over three decades ago since the divine monsters, Daemons, made a contract with the mere mortals of this world. These mortals are called humans. Unbeknownst to the vast population of these humans was that, among them, there were a couple that differ from the normal ones.

Some of these "special" humans have a natural drop of divinity in their blood. And this, was exactly the Daemons' target.

Before the contract was created, an abundance of people around the world would disappear without a trace. Some of their bodies would be found years later, while some were never seen again at all.

The contract was made three decades ago, between a high ranking Daemon themself and a human from our side. The Daemon and the human arrived one day in one of the world's most powerful government building and explained the newly made pact. The contract states that once in every four years, a selected group of people will be offered to the Daemon's as a tribute.

The selected individual in return, will receive a hefty prize of gold after their service for a year. Yes, bars of gold. And a separate initial payment before they are sent off to them. There's a reason why some tributes end up becoming well-known and famous throughout the world.

In the start, people protested because the participation was involuntary. No country is even exempted from this rule. But seeing how some previous tributes returned in once piece after a year and an extreme change in their bank account balance, some people decided on their own to join willingly. Some may do it for the money, while some did it for fame. Either way, the involuntary participation law became quite unnecessary. Although, even when there was a massive change of public opinion and an increase in the number of people who wanted to join, the actual number of people that got selected remained unchanged.

There were whisper of gossips here and there, that in order to get chosen as a tribute, there were qualifications. Of course this was never been proven true since the selected ones end up to be very different from each other, in terms of their gender, age, ethnicity, appearance, and more.

Indeed, it seemed random enough, this selection of theirs - but this alone cannot hush the speculations of the people.

The world's slow anticipation and dread can be felt each time the four year agreement in the contract came to an end, because that could only mean that the search for the next batch of individuals will be starting all over again.

Your character is a living, breathing, human being in this world. And it's 2113, the year of the 32nd Schadenfreude Selection.
