A cold hike

Aidan yelled as he slipped on the cold stone. "Ooph," he said as he hit the ground. Harry held out his hand to help him up. "That looks like it hurt," laughed Nat. "That's the fourth time, I think I'm used to it," Aidan replied brushing the snow off of his coat. It had been a week since the first snowflake and now the entire island was covered in thick white snow. They were all now wearing a coat of wolf fur. They were warm. Curtesy of the wolves. They were hiking the mountain to get to the top. They were trying to map out the island. What better way then to get a view from up above. Once the island was mapped out they would add the camps they knew of and the good hunting places so that they would remember were to go. Thank goodness they lived inside a mountain. They would have had to walk across the island to get to it. All they had to do was get their bear skin boots on and walk outside. They would still have to climb to the top of course. That's what they were doing now. Aidan pulled out a chicken leg from his pocket. "That's the last of it," Aidan sighed. "The last of what?" Asked Nat, not looking back. "The chicken!" Aidan yelled. "I would say the winter has brought us something but all it's done is taken thing." Winter had come wiping out all of the food. They had to make do with what they've got. Aidan took a small bite and saved the rest for later. It didn't help his empty belly. The best food they've had was the rabbits. That was a week ago. They say humans can only last three weeks without food. To Aidan, it felt he would die without a bite to eat within only a day. Another problem was water. A human lasts only 3 days without. They've hardly had any. The winter has frozen up pretty much all the freshwater lakes and rivers. "I hate winter,it use to be my favourite season, but I'm starting to think otherwise!" Aidan complained as they drew closer to the top of the mountain. Nat joined in on the complaint. "I know, it's taken our food, our speed, our surprise and our water!" Harry sighed. "Not to mention sleep, I haven't had a good night sleep for days now, it's too damn cold!" Nat laughed, "look on the bright side, we've reached the top of the mountain!" They sat mapping out the island for a few hours until we finished the shape and the good hunting places. It was beginning to get dark so they decided to start heading down the mountain. "Oh, I just realised, the sun would definitely be down by the time we get halfway, it'll take to long to walk down." Nat smiled and joked, "who said anything about walking." Before Aidan could work out what he ment, Nat had slid down the mountain on his backside. "What the-" Aidan paused as he watched Harry jump down after him. Aidan noticed how smooth the mountain side was. They could easily get to the bottom without hitting any rocks. "Here goes nothing!" Aidan sighed to himself. He sat down and pushed off the ground. His stomach lurched as he flew down the mountain side. He quickly swerved to the left to avoid a tree. Aidan gulped as he noticed a cave up a head. He braced himself. He flew over the cave opening and continued sliding along the ground. He stood up on his feet and watched everything fly past him. It was as if he was surfing. He had only gone surfing once. He attempted to do a tunnel surf. Of course he was only a beginner and sure enough, the second he went into the tunnel, it collapsed on him. This was amazing. "Wooooooooo!" He yelled in delight. Then he realised something that made his stomach drop to his toes. This side of the mountain ended in... A cliff. Aidan said his last prayers to god as he hurtled over the side. Then he noticed another thing that brought his stomach back up to his knees. He was falling into the ocean. He quickly brought himself to a dive position and braced himself. Three... Two... One... Splash!!! Aidan swam to the beach where he lay down and rested. "woooo!" He sighed, out of breath, putting his arms up in the air. As he put his arms down he heard Nat beside him say, "howdy mate!" Aidan looked to his right to see that his two friends had made it alive. He sat back up to see the last rays of sunlight disappear over the horizon. The lay there for the next fifteen minutes until they eventually got up and headed back.
