Annabeth was annoyed, and God helped those she decided to take it out on.
She was usually good at controlling herself, but the constant parade of princess lessons her aunt had dumped on her was not helping her.She could play the violin, and carry a decent tune. She was a good enough singer, weaver, painter and was particularly gifted at sewing. She didn't see the need to practice how to sit, or how to curtesy or how to sneeze elegantly.
It was all too much.
I should be focusing on strategies, and how to run a kingdom! she thought to herself.
On the bright side, her father was the kingdom's general and took care in passing this knowledge onto her.
Whenever he got the time, that is.
Splitting his time between his estate and the palace must be hard on him, but he tried his best and often that was good enough.
Annabeth walked down the corridor in a huff, her long puffy dress scratched her arms. Yet another thing her aunt had become unusually insistent on. Her wearing these ball gowns even in her own chambers.
It seemed that the second Annabeth had become of age, Queen Minerva had done everything to get her under control.
Maybe the queen was worried of loosing her power. Or perhaps the old age might've finally snapped her mind.
"Oof!" she yelped, as she bumped her shoulder, only to be steadied by a warm arm.
It was that boy again, the one with no name.
She had resorted to calling him seaweed brain in her head, given the pile of seaweed that was atop his hair when she first met him.
"Oh! I'm so sorry. Are you hurt?" she asked him, dusting herself off, "Oh right. I forgot you can't speak, I'm sorry," her face turned red as she said the last part.
He shook his head, seemingly fine. He pointed at her, cocking an eyebrow as if asking her if was was alright.
"I'm good. It's just that ugh! Have you ever had insufferable dancing lessons?! For a dance you've learnt from since you were a child but just learn again for absolutely no reason!"
She found herself venting, the boy watching her with curious eyes. Eyes she couldn't shake the feeling she saw before. So similar to the ones she dreamt about.
"I don't know why I'm even telling you this," she admitted, moving out of the way as a servant passed, a big tray in his hand. He gave her a quick bow and she offered him a smile.
The boy shrugged too. Maybe he was wondering that too, but he motioned for her to continue anyway. So she did.
"And it's so stupid! I should be learning more worthwhile things! After all, I am set to be queen one day," she saw the boy nod.
She exhaled, trying to stop herself from venting more, she didn't know this boy after all, "I'm sorry. I'm sure I'm wasting your time, I'll let you be," she nodded.
He reached for her forearm, stopping her from leaving. He shook his head. You're not wasting my time.
"Gods I wish I could actually understand you," she smiled, allowing herself to stay a little longer. Anything better than that boorish class.
His smile turned sad as he nodded, letting go of her arm.
She looked at his suit, perfectly tailored to fit his body. It was purple, again. It contrasted her orange gown.
And it seemed that every suit this man wore seemed to be purple. Did he have a fascination with the colour or something?
"Looking at you, it seems like purple is your favourite colour. It's all you've been wearing," Annabeth chuckled, trying to fill the silence that descended on them.
The boy shook his head, and pointed at a nearby tapestry.
"What?" she asked, turning to face the tapestry. It depicted a very peculiar scene, a somewhat camp like environment. A camp for half bloods, 'the children of the Gods' read the description.
Annabeth had always found the idea insane.
The boy pointed at the lake that flowed behind the great while building, tapping on the different hues of blue.
"Blue?" she asked. He nodded.
"So blue is your favourite colour?" she repeated. The boy nodded again.
He cradled his arms against himself, as if he were holding an infant, and rocked them back and forth.
"Uh...a baby?" Annabeth asked, confused yet again. When the boy shook his head, she tried again, "soothing? a nursemaid...a..a mother?"
The boy finally smiled, dropping his hands as he confirmed her final guess.
"Oh mother! It is your mother's favourite colour!" she said exclaimed, glad to have figured that out.
The boy clapped his hands, a smirk which looked to be trouble playing on his lips. It made her heart skip a beat.
"Do another one, I want to see if I can guess again," Annabeth laughed.
The boy obliged and till deep into the night, they were at it.They snuck into the royal gardens with the boy acting out scenarios and Annabeth eventually guessing them with ease as they fell into sync.
Soon they created their own language, one which didn't need words. Or the ability to talk.
One that bridged their gaps, and if anything, helped Annabeth understand him a little bit better.
