✰ ₊˚.༄Max stared at the letter in her hands for a long moment, faintly hearing the loud whistling of the train, signaling its departure.
A week ago, her and the party had decided to take a vacation, bored of the repetitive daily at Hawkins. They threw dart at the map and England became their definite destination. And after having gotten permission from all of their parents, the teens departed and took the earliest flight to London.
They were having a party meeting at the hotel room, their first day in the country having not even passed yet— when a clumsy, snowy owl barged in from the window, dropping five letters in the middle of their circle, on the bed. Naturally, they all thought it was just some kind of prank, however, when a stern looking woman with a witch hat stumbled out of the hotel room's fireplace, telling them that she had successfully gotten the approval of their muggle parents to attend Hogwarts, a school of magic, they didn't really know how to react.
It had taken the woman— Mcgonagall was it?— at least four hours of explaining the whole witch and wizard thing for the teenagers to finally understand. Turns out they were wizards too— but they had been in a place that was magically unreachable so they didn't get an invitation from any wizarding school. The party had a little idea why— if the Hawkins lab and the upside down were anything to go by.
Max's mom called her, and said that she will be okay with this under the condition that Billy would live in England too, and that Max had to meet with him at least once a month, during her trips at Hogsmead.
Apparently it was the same with Mike, and Will, meaning that Nancy and Johnathan would be here too, and Max could bet that Steve would follow suit as well, since his parents were pretty rich and didn't care about what he did with his life.
Mcgonagall promised she would escort them to this Diagon Alley place where they would get their supplies, and told them not to worry, and that she and some other students would help them catch up on the two years they had missed.
The reactions had varied. Dustin and Will were extremely excited, and were almost jumping up and down in anticipation. Mike was thinking about Eleven, and how he was to spend five years in a school that was miles and miles away from where she was. Or in this situation— hoped she was. Max was surprised, not sure if this was all a dream she would wake up from.
However, Lucas was the one who took it the worse.
As soon as Mcgonagall left, Lucas stood up, not saying anything. He had turned around, completely silent, then walked quietly over to the armchair by the fireplace. Max thought the boy was about to faint, and just then, Lucas kicked the armchair so hard it shot a good three feet away.
"Lucas!" Shouted Dustin, standing up as well.
"I'm sick of this!" The teen yelled, gesturing wildly with his hands. "Magic and dimentions, demogorgons, crazy scientists and upside down and— fuck!" He kicked the armchair another time. It skidded to a half barely an inch away from the crackling fire. "No arcade after school anymore! I'll never get to beat max in Dig Dug." He whined, collapsing on the ground.
"I think you missed the part where she said that we're wizards and that we're attending a school for fucking magical kids." Dustin reminded, earning a reluctant nod from Lucas. " I bet we'll find an arcade somewhere close— or we could just open our own. Imagine..." and from there, the party had talked and conspired the entire night away, also skimming through the book Mcgonagall left them. 'Hogwarts : a history.' Apparently they'd find a lot of information on there.
Naturally, with a group consisting of a bunch of nerds, it was not hard to understand how things worked around the wizarding world.
Like promised, the next day, Mcgonagall had came back to fetch them, and soon the group was taken to Diagon Alley to get their supplies. Everything went smoothly, if it wasn't for the teens to gape or gasp at every magical thing that happened around them. Flying bags, goblins, potions and wands.
Max still remembered the interaction.
The man who looked on the verge of dying— Ollivander, held onto the stick and came out, placing it on the front desk. Maxine surveyed the object with a curious eye.
"Hm, Dark cherry wood, strong and nimble," The man mumbled to himself, stroking the wand as if it was the most delicate thing in the world , "White Phoenix feather, usually from a hatchling before they get their colors, and finally, basilic scales."
"Damn," Dustin breathed from beside her, causing the redhead to crack a smile. As she soon as she held the wand, a wonderful wave of warmth hit her. According to Ollivander, she had found her match.
Soon enough, it was the day of their departure. As they arrived, Max witnessed the breath-taking sight of the scarlet metal of the steam engine perched on the tracks, the metal polished and shining in the afternoon sun as hundreds of conversations filled her ears, all the while families shuffled around.
Parents chatting with each other, children forgetting their toads, cats and whatever, people leading their luggage onto the train and old friends catching up after the break. A sign hung overhead : 'Hogwarts express', embossed proudly in brass next to a clock as a reminder that the train had exactly twenty five minutes left before departure.
Max only got back to her senses once she heard Mike's voice calling for her. She quickly joined the boys in boarding the train, and it hadn't taken long enough for them to find an empty compartment. Max ended up sitting between Will and Dustin, while Lucas was next to Mike.
The girl was impressed with the width of the place. Each compartment was able to hold at least eight people in. Nothing like the one she used to take in Cali.
From the corner of her eyes, Max noticed Will rubbing the back of his neck, a distant look in his eyes. She was about to ask if he was okay, when the compartment's door was suddenly slid open.
"Anything from the trolley dears?" A plump, gentle looking woman asked, pushing a trolley full of sweets along with her.
Mike was quick to stand up, being the son of a pretty wealthy family, he lived up to the title as he went ahead and brought quarter of all the sweets inside that trolley. The teens were excited to try the stuff they had here— not only from England, but from a wizarding world.
"Lucas you gotta try this— it's so good," gushed Dustin, pushing the box 'Berty Botts every favor beans' in the other boy's direction. Lucas grabbed one and ate it, instantly regretting having done that. He looked like he was about to throw up. Swiftly, after giving Dusting a glare, Lucas scrambled out and ran for the bathroom like his life depended on it.
Max was just about to take another bite out of her chocolate frog, when the compartment's door was slid open again,
this time it wasn't the trolley lady though.
