Your mother made a habit of celebrating your birthday with a ice cream cake every year since you had been brought home from the hospital. After sixteen years of ice cream cakes, you had a favorite. *Your favorite ice cream* cake had been a birthday staple for about eight years at this point, and your seventeenth was no exception. After spending December 31st craving the cake you knew you would have that night before you would bid farewell to your family, your parents and little brother, to go to a New Year's party with your friends, you grew bored. In an attempt to fill the time before 6:00 pm, you decided to take your brother out shopping at the local mall.

"Hey, Buddy! Want to come shopping with me? We can go look at the train," you smiled at your six-year-old brother's face.

"Yeah!" He grinned right back at you.

Your brother and you shared y/e/c eyes and smile that we both inherited from your mother. He also got her hair, you got your dad's.

"Okay, I'll go tell Mama. Go get your coat, Little Guy," you watched your brother run off to grab his coat while you turned around to tell your mother where you would be going.

After your brother and you had returned home and he had shown your mother the car he had picked out at a store, it was time for cake. As you turned toward my room so you could get ready for the night ahead, your mother kissed the top of your head and said, "Me and Dad are gonna take your brother with us to get the cake, we'll be right back, okay?"

"Okay," you smiled and then continued on your way to your room. You sat down at your vanity and began to apply makeup and style your hair. You listened to the sound of your parent's car leaving as you opened up your closet, looking for something to wear. Before you knew it, an hour had passed. Growing worried, you tried to call your mom, but you only got her voicemail. You frowned, perhaps her phone died? Trying not to think of the worst, you awkwardly walked out to your car, started the engine, and made your way to the Dairy Queen your family always went to. About three minutes into the drive, you were met with what you had been worrying about. First responders were everywhere and you caught a glimpse of what looked like your parents car, absolutely wrecked.

Oh my- please be alive, you thought to yourself, on the verge of tears.  But at that moment all you heard was a police cruisers radio name the exact street your parents car was on and two words that changed your life.

No survivors.
