"How is test subject C doing so far?"
The assistants shifted the display of the computers to a projection above the pods. "Vitals are stable, Dr. Stevenson."
"Brain activity stable."
"Hibernation-pod stable."
"Good, good. Let's see if he's ready for the procedure. Prep the first pith."
As she spoke, the petite, green-haired woman in the black lab coat leaned over the railing above the three-panel users. Then she swirled around and exited the laboratory. Making her way through the quarters in a hurry, she passed the various other workers in the quarters along the way; armed guards, physicists, chefs, etc., specialists of every field, and all from various walks of life. Then a blond-haired woman, in an animal t-shirt tucked in her jeans and carrying a small stack of books into an office, called out to her.
"Come to give me some good news, Beonica?"
The doctor entered the room and leaned against the doorway as the woman plopped on a desk with various encyclopedias.
"We are prepping Subject C for the first pith."
"Already? He must be a special one."
Stevenson smiled and nodded.
"Indeed. I think he's the one."
The woman gazed for a second then walked across the room toward the doctor.
"I sure hope so, doctor. We are quite simply running out of time. Who knows how much longer we've got until they reach us?"
The doctor reached up and comforted the professor.
"Cara, we won't have to wait much longer. I know that Subject C will retain all three piths."
"I've heard that one before—the last thing I need is for all my research to go to waste."
Professor Collins shifted back toward the desk and opened up the animal science textbook at the top of the stack.
"Humans have made countless scientific wonders. But we...we have elevated their efforts beyond comprehension."
Stevenson smiled at this nerdy impersonation she had begun doing.
"Something truly salubrious that will save all of mankind!"
"The pith," Stevenson said, joining in on the moment.
"The anodyne to all illnesses, the epitome of medicine, the in—"
The doctor took a side step out of the doorway.
"All right, all right, now, you're just being loquacious."
She stopped the charade and closed the book.
"Seriously, though. I may have finally cracked their codes. We should be able to maximize their abilities now."
"Perfect. The timing couldn't have been any better."
