John observed from across the road as Paul kissed his girlfriend goodbye and watched her go. John knew that Paul wasn't particularly fond of this girl; in fact, he was likely only dating her because the girl would put out.
Paul turned his head and saw John watching him. He was surprised to see the older boy there, but not altogether displeased. Paul looked both ways and then crossed the road, heading for John.
"Alright?" The two of them chorused upon coming face-to-face for the first time in almost two weeks.
"Paul..."
"John..." the two were speaking in unison, and would usually have found this funny - but in this situation it was tense and awkward, and the only thing that either of them could think about was how much they had missed the other.
They were, after all, best friends.
"Ruby says we're going to be big, Paul." John took a cigarette from the box in the pocket of his coat and lit it. "Famous one day, on tour and shit."
"How's she know?" Paul asked, "she see the future?"
"Don't be like that." John answered, "she just knows shit. She believes in us, Paul, and I do too."
Paul was silent. He believed in the band too.
"So what do you want, John?" Paul knew exactly what John wanted... but he wanted to hear him say it.
"Come back, Paul." John dropped the cigarette and stamped it out. He looked at his friend. His best friend. "We've got something good and we can't let it go to the dogs. We're going to the toppermost of the poppermost, and I can't do it without you."
God, John thought as soon as he had finished talking, I sound like a girl. I've gone soft!
But he didn't care. He wanted Paul to say yes. He needed Paul, and Paul needed him... and they both needed the band.
Paul took two or three seconds to deliberate - his mind was made up before he had even crossed the road, but he wanted John to think that there was actually a choice to make.
He nodded.
"Okay, John."
John grinned, "think you can get Geo on board?"
Paul shrugged, "George is an leccy's prenny. I dunno if he'll want to leave - I know his dad was quite strict about him being employed -"
"Yeah but think you can do it?"
Paul nodded, "yeah 'course. When do you want us for?"
"Tonight." John said, "Gambier Terrace, six o'clock."
Paul nodded again, "alright, yeah. I'll get Geo and we'll grab our instruments before coming over."
John nodded and the two separated.
When John got home, Ruby was waiting for him. She hoped that he had been successful, and knew it was very unlikely that he had not: Paul loved the band as much as John, and had just as much faith in it as its leader.
"Well?" She asked despite her surety.
The grin on her boyfriend's face gave her her answer. Ruby squealed in delight and ran across the room, throwing herself into John's arms. He caught her, and she wrapped her legs around his middle. The two of them kissed, their heartbeats in sync with each other. It was pure love; perfection, even.
When they parted their lips, John still held her tightly. "Marry me, Rube..." he said again, looking into her eyes, desperate to lose himself in them and her love forever.
"John..." how badly she wanted to say yes. Why did he keep asking and making this harder for her?
"I wouldn't ask if it wasn't what I wanted, baby." He laid his forehead against her own. Ruby could feel his breath on her skin. Shivers went down her spine. "I want you to marry me."
"But we've only been together a few -"
"Doesn't matter." He promised, shifting her weight in his arms. "I want you marry me. I need you to marry me. I'm waiting for you to marry me." John kissed her lips softly once more before he whispered against them, "be Mrs Lennon."
"If I say no...?"
"Then I will take you into that bedroom now and make love to you until you change your mind."
If she wasn't wet before, she certainly was at John's husky tone of voice and his words.
"And if I say yes...?"
"Then I will take you into that bedroom now and make love to you until George and Paul get here - at which point I will stop only long enough to pull on some trousers and send them away again. I will then come back to you, and make you cum so many times that you lose count."
Ruby breathed out a sigh of delight.
"The second option sounds much better." She spoke in a voice barely more audible than a whisper.
John smiled a little and asked in a voice just as quietly, "is that a yes?"
Ruby nodded twice and then kissed her fiancé again.
Mrs Lennon.
