Chapter 2:

Something hard, yet small, kept hitting Hawkpaw in the side. He moaned and got even more comfortable. As it continued, hee got more and more annoyed. Finally, he opened his glowing green eyes and lashed out. A blurry and dark figure ran backwards, stumbling. After blinking a few times, the figure slowly transformed to a small cat.

"Wildpaw!" He exclaimed. Then a pang of guilt flooded through him. Wildpaw was bunched against the wall, blood dripping from his nose. Hawkpaw quickly ran over to him.

"I didn't mean to! I..I swear!" He tried to convince his friend, but Wildpaw just looked at him, his gaze turning playful. Before Hawkpaw could react, Wildpaw lunged at him, tackling him to the ground, mrrowing with laughter. They both got up and shook their dusty fur. He looked outside and saw the sun setting.

"You slept forever! Anyways, we're supposed to go on a hunting patrol," Wildpaw explained. Hawkpaw padded out, his tail held high, with Wildpaw behind him. He saw Badgerstripe waiting for him by the camp entrance, and quickly ran over to him.

"About time," Badgerstripe nodded at him, and they set out.

As they reached their destination, Hawkpaw's nostrils filled with the acrid scent of NightClan. Why can I smell them this far away from the border? Then it hit him, they're attacking. Just at the same time, thumping paws and streaking pelts were seen just beside him. He yowled and attempted to jump on top, but it was too late. They were heading for the camp.

He looked over at Badgerstripe as he yowled and ran after the intruding cats. Hawkpaw followed, with Wildpaw bringing up the rear. Hawkpaw ran as fast as he ever ran in his life. He didn't feel the need to breathe heavily or stop and gain more energy. All he felt was the blood pulsing in his ears and the need to protect his Clan.

They burst through the undergrowth, a hot battle underway. All Hawkpaw wanted to do was fight, so as he saw the nearest pelt he didn't recgonize, he jumped directly on the back of it. They tossed and turned, and Hawkpaw ended up on the bottom of the huge tabby. He raked his claws down the tabby's belly and the warrior jumped off, howling in pain. He whipped around as he felt claws tear into his skin. The cat fell, off balance, onto the ground. Seizing his opportunity, Hawkpaw leaped on top of her and bit into her ear. At the same time, the cat turned her head, trying to wiggle out. This torn the cat's ear, and she, too, howled in pain. Quite shocked, Hawkpaw loosened his grip and let the she-cat run.

"NightClan, fall back, retreat!" A familiar voiced yowled. Ripplestar! He thought.

Just as it had begun, the battle ended. A few RainClan warriors continued the chase, while most stayed to see to the damage.

RainClan's medicine cat, Runningpatch, ran out with a mouthful of herbs, and immediately began tending to wounds. Miraculously, other than a few scratches, Hawkpaw came out with no wounds.

Then he glanced over and saw a bloody mess. Hawkpaw squinted his eyes to make out who it was. Then shock overcame him like a lightning bolt. Wildpaw.
