Chapter 16:
But the bear was still there.
It was different, its eyes were green and calm. Its ragged pelt was smooth and shiny, and its long, menacing claws were trim and smooth.
It fell to four legs, blinking once as it calmly strode over to them. They braced themselves, prepared to run. But the aroma around them was calm and soothing.
"I must thank you for saving me." Its voice was smooth and deep. The cats all exchanged glances and Hawkpaw stepped forward.
"Who are you?" His tone was cool, as if he was the leader.
"I am Storm, and I suppose you would like to hear my story." The bear sat down neatly, his calm green gaze sweeping across the cats. But no cat challenged him, so he went on. "The Dark Forest controlled me, they wanted only blood and revenge. Then your friend saved me," he gestured towards Hawkpaw. "But I am sorry for the white one, the Dark Forest sent the lightning bolt that made the tree crash on him."
"We, too, are sorry," Hawkpaw began. "And I suppose you must be on your way. May StarClan light your path."
"Indeed." With that, Storm got up and slowly lumbered off.
-----
"I, Stormstar, leader of RainClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down upon this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend him as a warrior in his turn. Hawkpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, even at the cost of your life?" Stormstar's eyes glittered as he looked at the dark tabby tom.
"I do." Hawkpaw breathed.
"Then, by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Hawkpaw, from this moment on, you will be known as Hawkfire. StarClan honors your strength and courage, and we welcome you as a full warrior of RainClan."
"Hawkfire! Hawkfire!" He tilted his head up, pride welling in his chest as his Clanmates called his name.
Wildfrost came over and licked his ear, purring. Moonshine pressed close to him as Jadegaze whispered something in Wildfrost's ear.
It had been seven sunrises since the bear attack, and today was the day all the apprentices got their warrior names.
All of the kits rambled on about it, and always acted it out. Everyone wanted to be either Skypelt of Hawkfire. The elders all mumbled about how worse they had it in their day, and Tallspirit was nearing closer to having her kits.
Everyone grieved Skypelt's heroic death, especially Snowtiger, his mate. But they were all forced to return to normal Clan life, though hardly anyone forgot the great battle.
A frantic cry sounded from inside the nursery walls as Rowanstorm ran out. "Tallspirit's kitting!"
-----------------
Mwuhahaha. Cliffhanger, sorta. But one of the kits will have something to do with the next book.....it's gonna be AWESHUM. And Hawkfire gets to name one..
Also, notice that Hawkfire used fire against Storm and his suffix is fire? Heh...it also sounds pretty awesome.
See ya next chappy!
