Donavan put the rings in the pocket of his hoodie, and Core took us to an unpopulated area and started to train us.

"You both have elemental powers, so the first thing to do is to understand the strengths and weaknesses of your power. Fire is an extremely offensive power. It offers little protection, and you have a limited supply, but it can harm almost anything. You two were paired up because your powers are pretty much the strongest ones." Core began.

"As a metalpotentia, you also have a limited supply."

"Really? I've never had a problem with it." Said Steel

"I don't think you've fought in an alley fight before. In real life, metal has to have lots of heat to be created. So you were paired up. Phoenix, you should be able to boost his power by striking it and give him a larger supply."

"Striking?" I asked, dumbfounded.

"Here, let me show you." Core created a metal ball. "Now, call the fire in yourself up to your fingers, but don't blast it out. Then, touch the ball."

I did as she asked and was surprised when the ball caught fire. Core didn't seem to be affected by the burn.

"You did it! Basically, anyone who holds this item can become a firepotentia."

"WHAT!?" Steel and I shouted at the same time.

She nodded sadly. "It is extremely hard to do, unless you are a fire or air or metalpotentia. This is because the power is inside you, but if you are a water or earthpotentia, you have to use the power around you to strike something, which is much harder because it must be done simultaneously."

I nodded. "Is it possible to reverse it?"

"I have never seen it done before unless the item is something created, like this ball. I can call the metal back into me and then the item ceases to exist."

"I bet I could do it." I could feel the fire wanting to burn everything in its path, wanting to escape and destroy everything. "The fire wants to burn everything in its path." I said.

"You can feel it?" Core's head snapped up.

"Yeah, it still is alive and burning, just not burning anything. That's making the fire angry."

Steel and Core were shocked. "You talk as if it is alive." Steel said.

"You don't feel the same thing?" I asked

They both shook their heads. "Metal only ever feels alive when it is in me, I lose all connection the second I blast it out." Core said

"Huh. Well, can I try?"

Core nodded. I touched the ball and closed my eyes. Instantly, the fire...spoke?

Burn, consume, devour!

No

Why? Why? WHY?

Not yet

CONSUME! BURN!

Don't you want to come back?

NO! CONSUME!

I assume your favorite word is consume?

CONSUME!

Tell you what? If you come out of the ball-

LEAVE BALL NOW!

OK! Just come back into my hand, and leave the ball. Then I will let you burn some grass. OK? But then after we have to come back in.

BURN! FIRE! CONSUME!
