GWENDOLYN ROSENTHAL found that the worst people made the best decisions. She knew from the age of thirteen that she did not and would never like John Winchester, but she also knew he had done what needed to be done. Her mother, Selene Rosenthal, had lost herself long ago — keeping just enough sanity to raise Gwen, although not well. Gwen didn't know to what extent her mother had changed, except for that one thing of course, she certainly noticed the different energy that her mother carried. Gwen was special like that, or so she was told — she was able to read energy, albeit it was hard with so many in one person.

When she was thirteen, Gwen witnessed her mother's murder. The woman who laid at her feet didn't feel like her mother, but she was all Gwen knew. She knew it wouldn't have been any use for her to try to defend her mom, so she surrendered herself to the two hunters. A grown, scruffy man and a teenage boy around her age had pointed their weapons and she raised her hands in surrender.

Once they made their deal, Gwen couldn't help but feel wrong in doing so. Here she was, a loyal witch, making a deal with the two men who killed her mother.

So after they made their deal, John Winchester offered Gwen something she would never regret taking.

     A home.

Not with him—no, he'd never have his sons around someone so dangerous. Instead, he left her with fairly known hunter — Bill Harvelle and his wife Ellen Harvelle, along with their daughter Jo Harvelle. He kept in contact with her at times, but never visited—only seeing each other if they happened to be at Bobby's. Gwen thought, perhaps, it was for the best.

Ellen took her in with open arms, especially since Gwen became such a great support system for Jo after Bill had died. Although the witch thing freaked her out, she embraced Gwen like a daughter and never made her feel out of place. The brunette soon earned enough money at the Roadhouse and ventured off on her own, promising Ellen and Jo that she'd visit often.

Gwen did try to keep that promise, but Ellen and Jo also understood greatly what being on her own meant for Gwen.

Gwen did stay in touch with one other Winchester for two years after she left, often meeting him in the middle to visit him. Sam Winchester was her best and only friend besides Jo. He was a fun and smart boy, two years her junior, who never shunned Gwen for being a witch like his father and brother. Instead, he often asked Gwen to preform her magic as he found it interesting — much to his older brothers disgust.

Dean Winchester was a simple hunter. Shoot first, ask questions later. He and Gwen had never gotten along and they honestly never planned to. There was an unspoken agreement between the two, to trust each other until it no longer benefited themselves. And, to keep Sammy safe at all costs. Both of which the two had kept all these years.

It had been years since Gwen had seen any hunter, besides Jo and Ellen. Six years to be exact. She had kept to herself in her apartment, never contacting anyone who didn't contact her first. Everything was calm — perfect almost.

Until Dean Winchester comes knocking at her door, asking her to accompany him in getting Sam back to find John.

Gwen can't help but join him, finding herself in much deeper shit than she thought.
