SURPRISE VISIT
——————————GWEN WASN'T SURE why she felt uneasy. Perhaps it was the fact that it was so silent outside, with only fresh, breezy air blowing or perhaps it was the fact that Jo and Ellen hadn't called in days. She knew they weren't in trouble, but she worried nonetheless. Hunters practically lived at their bar and only-God-knows what monsters they could drag in. She knew Ellen could protect herself, and so could Jo, but Gwen often worried when things went radio silent.
Despite Jo texting and insisting they was fine (though Gwen would've preferred a call.), Gwen couldn't help the unease she had been feeling for days. It felt as though her body knew something going to happen before it even happened. Gwen hated when she felt like that. Perhaps it was her sixth sense as a witch, but it was still annoying nonetheless.
Gwen slipped her phone into her purse and pressed the 'UP' button to the elevator in front of her. She watched the numbers decrease until finally it dinged and the doors opened like magic. She slipped inside and pressed the number to her floor, and as it closed, she lowered her purse to her wrists.
A hand slipped between the closing doors, making them slide back open, revealing a relatively young man. He looked a year or two younger, but cute nonetheless. His brown eyes looked at her gently and his lips held a small smile. Gwen glanced at his hair and found it was brushed back, before looking him in the eyes again.
He slipped inside, muttering a quiet apology, and stood beside her. The elevator began to slide closed again, this time fully as it contained the two of them.
"I'm Winston," he said, revealing a British accent.
"Francine," Gwen replied. It wasn't entirely a lie, it wasn't her first name — but it was one of her names.
Gwen had learned a long time ago that the less anyone, especially a total stranger, knew — the better. The last time she had, her mother got killed by hunters. Granted, it was bound to happen - but the idea still stuck with her. Besides, it didn't help that she was a woman anyway.
"You live here?" He asked.
This was the longest elevator ride she'd ever been in.
"No, visiting a friend," she replied.
"Same," Winston replied.
Gwen took notice to small things, that's what made her such a talented witch and 'part-time hunter' as regulars at the roadhouse liked to mention. They obviously didn't know the witch part, or she would have her head in a stick before she could say abracadabra — but she and Jo were often their fresh set of eyes on unsolved cases that hunters had.
So, it was no surprise to her when she immediately began to take in small details. He was fidgeting with his ring, a ring that had a skull engraved on the flat side. His jacket was also very baggy, like it had been handed down. There were a few things seemingly occupying the space in his jacket pockets, but nothing she could clearly make out. His eyes were nervous and unfocused, clearly making conversation as a form of distraction.
The doors opened and it was then that Gwen realized - he never actually pressed a floor number. She hoisted her bag up to her shoulder and gave a bidding 'goodbye smile', before beginning to step out.
As she walked, Gwen heard his footsteps following behind her. Pretending to not notice, Gwen began to rummage into her purse to 'find her keys'. In reality, she was slipping her knife out of a hidden pocket in her purse. Cliché and stupid, she knew, but she made sure to always be armed.
