"Yes, boss. All set!! Let's get back, crew," whispered Radio Jockey, Ady as she took the headpiece away from her mouth and promptly put up her thumb as an assurance that she was ready for the show.
"Hello, namaskar, assalam waleikum, Ola, my dear and enchantingly beautiful listeners!! Today, I welcome you all to another episode of "The seafarer" where we tell you interesting and spooky stories on the adventures in the middle of the never ending oceans!! At the moment, it's around 18°C around the entire expanse of the city, how do you feel, my শীত কাতুরে Bengali babus?? The traffic is intermediate with a huge congestion in the Rabindra Sadan-Exide region and we might experience a little difficulty along the Bali-Howrah Bridge road. Ahh, Kolkata, lesser a city of joy, more a city of traffic.
Never mind. So, before our minds get trafficked by the tiring thoughts of our monotonous lives, let's dive into the story about the wails of the sirens via the ship named, "My Jolly Sailor Bold" by our dearest friend and author, Audi!!" spoke the RJ through her headpiece into the microphone in front of her as her voice boomed across the expanse of the studio.
--------------------------------------------------:::10th February, 1998
Oceans are all well. Mermaid is doing good. Hope to anchor near Kent to get the food cargo. Will hopefully reach London by the 14th:::Y/N punched the letters into the telegram meant to be sent to London on updates about the ship, Mermaid that had set off the coast on 2 January, 1998 from the Cape of Good Hope.
"'Ey, sailor girl, did ye send the message??" asked Hardy, one of the crew members, with a heavy Welsh accent.
"Yes. I have dispatched the telegram. Hope it reaches London office soon," replied Y/N in a monotone while fixing her pants, "are we running out of food??"
"Not exactly. But we might have to cut down the extravagant diet. We have to find another ship to help us," said Jack, the grandson of the captain.
"The numbe' of passengers, lad??" asked Hardy as he opened his logbook to take notes.
"Around 30 on the upper deck and collectively 150 in the 2nd and 3rd class accommodations," replied Jack as he watched the old man scribble the data on the book.
After the discussion on a few miscellaneous matters, the entire crew agreed on a few arrangements that were to be made and the captain shot a few colour signals from the deck of the ship. In case, any other ship or cargo vessel around them noticed it.....
Post the little crew meeting, Y/N decided to go back to her room and take a short nap.
The journey from the Cape wasn't a tough one but was extremely time taking and even if Y/N had always been a sea person, she felt homesick. She wanted to get back to the warmth of her cozy home in Surrey where she used to stay with her mum and nephew for the Valentine's Day.
Her father and brother were in the English Navy but were killed in a shipwreck some five years ago. That incident kindled a spirit inside of her to conquer all the oceans of the world and thus, she set off from her little town in Surrey to register her name in the Royal Navy.
The Mermaid, was a beautiful ship. A little smaller in size than the infamous Titanic, it was indeed a copy of the former ship.
The ship had three decks meant for each section of the passengers. The topmost deck was meant for the crew members and the first class passengers for a splendid view of the sea in front of them and the other two decks hosted accommodations for the 2nd and 3rd class passengers.Y/N walked through the corridor along the railings of the ship towards her room which had a seperate balcony attached to it. Her cabin was located around the far corner of the upper deck and upon reaching it, she pushed the maplewood door open to enter it.
