"Checkmate." Alex said, as he moved his pawn, ending the game.
"What?!" Jack squeaked, pouting his lips. "What the hell, you know I'm bad at this game!"
The brunette chuckled, seeing his lover's reaction. They always played chess at the hospital gardens, on a weathered wooden table and an old chessboard. Alex absolutely loved it, and always played it to pass the time.
"Yeah right, you just won the first two rounds." The elder teen replied, folding his arms. "That doesn't count!" The younger whined, as he rearranged the chess pieces back to their original place. He accidentally knocked off the king with the swing of his hand, causing his chess pieces to all clatter onto the floor.
"Fuck!" Jack cursed, struggling to pick them up.
"Oh shit, I will get that." Alex said, as he dived under the table, picking up the fallen pieces.
He dumped them onto the chessboard, and Jack quickly rearranged it, apologising profusely to Alex. "Wait, not that way, your queen has to be on the black square." The brunette corrected the other teen, pointing to a spot on the board. "And you accidentally mixed the rooks and the knights up! Again."
The elder guided Jack's hand, which was holding one of the rooks and put it onto the ends of his side of the board. Jack blushed slightly, embarassed at his rookie msitake. Alex didn't realise he was already done arranging the pieces, and he was was basically just holding onto the younger's soft hand.
"Um, thanks." The skunk haired teen replied shyly, as he pulled his hand away.
"Don't you find it weird that the king is the weakest player?" Alex said, changing the topic, as he picked up his king. "But everybody protects him, so he can be safe."
"Interesting." The skunk haired teen replied, marvelling at his own king piece. "Never seen it that way."
They fell into a comfortable silence, both thinking about their king piece and basically how deep Alex sounded.
"One more game?" The elder asked, drumming his fingers against the table.
"I think... Somebody else has other plans." Jack said, as he pointed behind Alex, a nurse who was holding a tray, filled with different cups of medicine.
"This is so fucking annoying." The brunette muttered after seeing the nurse.Sometimes, he forgets he is in some stupid hospital, stuck here after the authorities were convinced he was not very normal. Jack stayed quiet, his eyes looking down.
"Alexander Gaskarth?" The nurse called out his name from her clipboard."Yes." Alex replied monotonously, uninterested. "Here is your prescription for today." The nurse said, overly sweet and just downright puke worthy, as she handed one small white cup. "The doctor said that he is considering to increase you dosage for the next month."
"Tell the doctor to go fuck himself with a chainsaw." Alex replied, swallowing the pills.
The skunk haired teen stifled a laugh upon hearing that, his face turning red. The elder giggled softly to the sight of Jack, but had to stop short as he catches the glare of the nurse.
"Alexander, language." The nurse warned, picking up the silver tray. "One more time, and your privileges to be outside will be revoked."
"What! That's so unfair, it happened only one time, give me a break." Alex argued, crushing the plastic cup in his hand. "I won't be able to play chest with Jack!"
"Jack?" The nurse turned, to look at Alex weirdly. "Who is Jack?"
"How rude, he is my boyfriend and he is sitting right across me right now." The elder tapped the table, causing Jack to look up."C'mon Jack, wave at her." The skunk haired boy quickly complied, waving and smiling at the nurse. The nurse looked taken aback, but nodded stiffly towards Jack. "Hello, Jack, pleased to meet you." The nurse said, a certain strain in her voice. "If you excuse me, I got to go."
She quickly walked off, her footsteps quick and swift. Almost as if she doesn't want to be there.
"I'm not sure why they never like you..." Alex trailed off as he realised his best friend was gone from his seat.
The chess pieces were all on the floor now, possibly from the skunk haired teen leaving in a hurry.
Jack always does this, disappearing every time the nurses come by. The brunette wasn't sure why he does that, but he thought that it's probably the nurse's fault.
The elder sighed, as he crouched to pick up the chess pieces. He held the king piece between his index finger and his thumb, examining it.
