A month or so had passed since I'd received Ness's letter. Each day passed normally, but to be honest, it did feel empty without him by my side. When I felt down, I reassured myself by saying that Ness would be home soon enough, and that he was enjoying himself. That was all I needed.
It was a sunny wednesday afternoon. Paula and I had been drinking lemonade and snacking on mini burgers on my front lawn, deep in conversation. She was very intelligent, so it was always fun to hear her thoughts on everything.
I had just gotten up to get Paula a refill, when I was stopped by a frail, yet masculine voice."Special delivery for Lucas? Is there a Lucas here?"
I turned around to see a postman holding out a well-decorated, somewhat familiar envelope. My legs carried me towards him, almost without thinking. As I took the letter from him, I realized how short I was compared to most adults. Being around kids made me forget that, as I was a little tall for my age.
I sat back down, envelope in hand, and my heart raced. The wax stamp was... a smash ball. It wasn't a letter from Ness, he just sent his on printer paper with stickers on it. The tournament wasn't nearly over yet- So why on earth would they send me an official letter?
I led my fingers over the delicate paper, nervous to read its contents. Hastily, I tore the envelope to shreds, unfolding the letter inside.
My eyes scanned each word, the little heart inside of me pumping faster and faster until I almost felt lightheaded.Upon reading the final line, I instinctively jumped to my feet, twirling, my face a mask of blinding sunshine and joy.
Paula chuckled. "Lucas, you're just like Ness. What's got you all riled up anyways?"
I laughed and pulled her into my arms, rapidly spinning her around in the air.
"Paula!" I shouted, dropping the both of us down, her landing in my lap. "They didn't forget about me!"
She giggled. "Who?"
"Everyone at smash bros! Paula, I-I'M GOING TO THE TOURNAMENT!"

When I arrived at the stadium, I was shocked to see how much everyone and everything had changed. Not a bad kind of shocked, though. Instead, it was pleasant. Refreshing.
My backpack slung lazily over my shoulder, I pushed on the door, but failed to open it. It was too heavy for my noodle arms. However, I got help in the form of a lilac arm, coming from behind, pushing it open for me. I looked up, a little startled, only to see the great Mewtwo. Ness had told me stories about him. Knowing how brutal he could be, I was surprised he had helped me at all instead of blasting me into the ground. Rumor had it that I had been invited to Brawl in place of him.
"Thank you, s-sir." I forced out, attempting not to anger him. He didn't seem to be all that upset. Instead, he just grunted, and moved his mouth in a way that I assumed was supposed to be a smile. At least he was trying.
Dragging my bags in, I felt a surge of adrenaline rush through my body as I witnessed Captain Falcon, Marth, Zelda and... Ness? Yes, Ness, going at it in the stadium. It reminded me of all the good times I had when I was in Brawl.
Ness was knocked down by Marth, and as he looked into the crowd of other fighters, we made eye contact.
"L-Lucas!"
Marth shouted at Ness in Japanese, causing Ness to panic a bit. "N-No! I'm- LUCAS! HE'S AT THE DOOR RIGHT NOW, MEWTWO TOO! JUST LOOK!"
This made everyone's head turn, facing me and Mewtwo. Ness was the first to run and hug me, followed by Toon Link, and Peach, who had treated me like her I was her own child the last time we were in a tournament together. Soon, I was being smothered with hugs by everyone, even newcomers. Well, aside from Mewtwo, who chose to stand to the side. Perhaps he still needed to be taught a little bit more about sentiment, which I was more than happy to do.
All of this came out of nowhere. After all of this time, they still cared. Out of everything on my mind, I could only think to speak one thing.
"W-Well, What are we waiting for? Time to smash!"
