6 years later...

The sun was rising and the birds were already chirping in the trees. The air was crisp with only a few dotted clouds in the sky that were still a bright pink. "Woo hoo" Velvet yield with happiness, she could feel the cool breeze under her wings. Then something scurried across the muddy ground below, Velvet tucked in her wings and dived toward the animal. She opened her jaws and snached the littel animal off the ground. A huge brown-orange dragon landed beside her, "very good, what did you cache?" Clay said with a pleased smile on his face. Velvet spat out the animal she had caute, it was dead and it was bleeding in several different places. "Just a fox," she grumbled, a little disappointed.
Velvet sliced the fox in half and gave a piece to Clay, who gobbled it up in a heartbeat. But Velvet liked to eat her food slowly so she could really enjoy it. "Are you ready to go?" he asked in a muffled voice, still stuffing a few scraps of meat in his mouth. "Almost done" answered Velvet, taking another bite out of her half of the fox.
"You know, maybe I should tell you next time that a dragon is about to bite your tail so you will eat faster," Clay said jokingly. "Ha ha ha, very funny father" replied Velvet sarcastically, They took off into the sky again. There was a moment of silence, then: "Father, why did mother leave?" Velvet asked curiously. "Huh?... oh!" Clay exclaimed suddenly, jerking his head toward her with a nervous look on his face. "ummm... hey look, I think I saw a RainWing!" said Clay anxiously avoiding her question. I finally got the courage to ask him and he won't even tell me. He always says that mother left for a good reason, so then why won't he tell me. "Stop avoiding my question, and tell me?" Velvet demanded. Clay sighed, "it's complicated", he said lowering his head. "I'm six, you can tell me. I'll understand whatever the reason is" Velvet said, rolling her eyes.
Velvet and Clay soared through the sky for a moment without talking. She was looking expectantly at Clay, who tried to ignore her stare. "Fine", Clay said. "Your mother left because she had too much fire so she didn't know if your scales were fireproof and she didn't want to risk hurting you. She thought there was less of a risk of you touching her if she... left", Clay finished sadly. "Woah" said Velvet looking very surprised. "So she left to protect me."
When the two dragons landed at the mountain that they lived in, Velvet rushed right to her room. The sound of her talons hitting the stone ground echoed through the hall. Father said that I was born from a blood-red egg, and that if you are born from a blood-red egg you have fire proof scales. So why was mother worried about burning me? Velvet thought disbelievingly. She skidded to a halt at the end of the corridor and opened a big stone door that led into her bedroom that she had hatched in. She walked over to the pile of leaves and moss, and curled up on it. A tear rolled down her cheek and she started sobbing, but she wasn't sure why. Was she angry?
A few minutes later, Velvet stopped crying and looked at her talons that were wet and glossy from her tears. There was a knock at the door, she lifted her head "come in", she sniffled. Clay stepped into her room, he walked over to her and put his talon on her shoulder efficiently. "Velvet there's something else that you have to know" he said in almost a whisper. Oh great, probably something even worse than my mother leaving before I hatched. "What is it?" sighed Velvet sadly, wiped the last tears off her cheek and faced her father.
"Listen, I don't really know how to say this but your mother's... a skywing" Clay said. Velvet stared blankly at him as the information washed over her. "Your mother's a skywing, your mother's a skywing, your mother's a skywing"the words echoed through her head. "Velvet, are you okay?" Clay said worriedly, waving his talon in front of her face. "WHAT!!!!" Velvet shouted, becoming aware of her surroundings once again. Clay jumped back in surprise, smoke rose from her nostrils as she stared angrily at him.
"Why did you never tell me this?" asked Velvet, trying to stay calm, her tail twitched as she stood waiting for an answer. "I didn't want you to feel like you didn't belong, '' Clay answered inecently, taking a step towards her. Velvet didn't really know how she felt. On one talon she was furious with her father, and she never wanted to talk to him again. But on the other talon she knew that he meant well, and he only wants the best for her. Velvet took a long forgiving sigh, and slowly said "it's all right" but really she was thinking: No it's not.

Velvet felt the texture of one of the pictures of a flame in her talons as she took it off the wall and placed it in a small leather bag with an animal skin strap. She put the strap over her shoulder, and krept down the long corridor making the least amount of noise possible. Clay was snoring on his bed, Velvet could hear his heavy breathing; it flowed nicely, but at the same time it was quick.
On the left hand side of the hallway there was a long winding path, and at the end there was a faint flickering light. Velvet rushed down the windy hallway towards the light, she kicked several pebbles down the hallway as she tried not to drag her talons on the stone floor.
When Velvet reached the end of the passage, she stopped at a doorway with torches lit on both sides. She stepped through the doorway silently without hesitation. In the room was a: Box shaped stone with a silver handle, a pool of water in an indent in the floor, and a big glowing glass ball that seemed to have fire in it.
The silver handle flickered in the dime light of the cave, as Velvet walked towards it. She grasped the cool handle in her talons, and opened the door of the stone block. Inside were two stone shelves with some frozen meat on each shelf. Velvet reached in, and pulled out a frozen warthog and stuffed it in her bag. Since it was dark out, she wouldn't be able to hunt. So she grabbed the warthog, so she would have some dinner, and then she could go hunting tomorrow morning.
Velvet walked to the entrance of the mountain as she thought about her mother. She didn't want to be like her mother who just left, because she was afraid of her fire. The reason she was leaving was because she needed answers from her mother. And she planned to search all of Pyrrhia until she could be found.
The breeze flooded into the mountain as Velvet got closer to the entrance. There were distant sounds of wingbeats and the glow of campfires on the ground below. The frogs were croaking on a little pond by the mountain side. The sound of the animals were soothing as Velvet took off into the night sky.
