Maeve was done with everything, her feet hurt, her eyes stung, her stomach was growling, and she just wanted to go to sleep. She had stayed at the cemetery for hours on hours finally deciding to leave when she realized her phone wasn't in her pocket and the sky was turning hues of oranges, reds, and yellows.
"I'm sorry Shinichiro."
With those parting words whispered to the grave, Maeve dusts herself off, flicking off the rocks that stuck to her thighs.
Maeve didn't notice the pain nor bruises the tiny rocks left her.
That's a tomorrow problem.
Right now she just wanted to go home and sleep.
And maybe cry a little.
More like a lot.
How could she not have realized that the boys were in her living room while she was getting railed upstairs.
"Maevey we aren't bothered that you were getting fucked if anything you needed it to get that stick out of your ass."
Maeve's eyes pop open and she raises her hand to smack Baji on the back of the head.
"Kei you guys are the reason I have a so-called stick up my ass."
"So you still needed a good night with someone."
Baji shrugs his shoulders and she rolls her eyes at his stupidity although he really wasn't wrong.
"I'm sorry."
"Nothing to be sorry for." This time its Mitsuya who speaks up, the boy sending her a smile before throwing his arm around her shoulders.
"So that was Imaushi Wakasa, aka one of Shinichros old best friend," Maeve says to Mikey who trailed behind them with Draken and Takemichi.
Mikey nods even though he had already met Shinichiro's old best friend and the guy who held Maeve's heart for years.
The six walk back to Maeve's house in comfortable silence, all of them relieved that none of them held a grudge. Baji was the most relieved, considering he didn't deserve her forgiveness after all the things he did.
Maeve was calm after all those years of wondering if her old friends were okay she finally got an almost clear answer that they weren't dead. When she first saw Wakasa she was scared he would break the news to her that one of their old friends was dead. No matter how much of an asshole Wakasa was she knew that he wouldn't fuck her right away after not seeing each other for years if one of their friends had died.
This had to have been the most okay she had felt in years, everything felt normal. Kazutora was finally getting better, Mikey had an amazing support system in Toman, Baji had Chifuyu, and Maeve knew all her old friends were okay. She finally felt... She felt... Maeve couldn't put her finger on what exactly she felt.
Maeve stops in front of her door smiling at the group of boys who watched her intently, smiling back at her before walking away. All except one, Mikey, just like Shinichiro. Maeve knew Mikey didn't do that to copy Shinichiro, considering the boy had never seen his older brother wait outside for his friends to go inside their house, lock themselves inside and wait a couple of seconds just to make sure they were okay before he left but that's exactly what Mike did. Mikey waited outside a couple of seconds after she walked inside before yelling, "Bye, bye!" and jogging away with a wide smile and yelling, "Kenny wait for me!" before jumping on the taller boy.
"Never change Manjiro Sano," Maeve whispers leaning against her door, knowing change was inevitable but she just wasn't ready for it.
Just as she pushes herself off her door she feels a piece of paper against her hands. Maeve rips it off her door seeing familiar handwriting with four familiar words.
'I don't either Wakasa.' With that thought in her mind she looks down at the piece of paper in her hands and she sees ten numbers written at the bottom, almost invisible, and it might have been if she hadn't looked closer. Maybe that's why Wakasa had written it so tiny, so if she truly wanted more of him she would examine the paper ad that's what she did, even though she never would admit she wanted more of the two-faced asshole - 'my bad I mean two-color haired asshole.' She needed something to prove that her life in the Black Dragons wasn't just a fever dream.
She knew it was a bad idea but without thinking, she punches in the number and presses the green dial button. It rings
one
two
three
four
five times and just as she's about to hand up a familiar raspy, bored voice answers.
Maeve hears a note of interest, 'or could it be happiness?' Maeve doesn't let her thoughts wander, knowing the boy was probably just shocked she called him, 'no that couldn't be it.' He knew she would call, he was probably just excited that he still had the power over her.
Yeah, that was it.
That had to be it.
Maeve couldn't delude herself into thinking it could be different.
It never was.
At least not with him.
Yet she always came back to him.
"Maeve."
"Mae if you don't answer I'm coming over."
"Okay." With that whisper of confirmation, Wakasa hung up and hurried back to her house that he had left not an hour earlier even though he didn't want to.
***
When Maeve opened the door Wakasa had expected her to slap him, punch him, kick him, even yell at him but what he didn't expect is for her to crash her lips onto his and pull him into her house and slam the door behind them. Maeve doesn't give him a second to question anything before she moved down his neck to suck on the sensitive skin there. Wakasa groans at the feeling of her sucking on his skin, leaving hickeys for everybody to see the next day.
"Maeve are you sure?"
Maeve stops sucking on Wakasa's neck for a second to glance up at him to nod her head and it felt like nothing had changed. Here she was back in Wakasa's arms just like always without a care in the world, laying herself bare for the boy while he took and took and never gave anything back. Just like always, she was okay with it, she was okay with the boy taking and leaving her high, dry, alone, sad, and regretting everything and swearing to never do it again just for her to do the same thing the next day. Nothing had changed, but that's just it everything had changed, except one thing, how she felt.
Maeve knew what she felt. she felt... calm, and that's what scared her, this felt like the calm before the storm.
