"Takemichi you forgot the lunch I packed for you guys!" Maeve says storming into the almost empty classroom where she knew Takemichi and his friends were.
Maeve glared down at the floor placing the bag on the floor not sparing the boys a glance.
"Dumbasses, I made you guys food and y'all don't even appreciate it you guys-" Maeve trails off looking up only to see a boy with striped hair hugging Takemichi, and before she can ask who it is he turns around to drag him away.
"I'm taking you to Valhalla's base!" The familiar voice says excitedly.
"Kazu- Kazutora," she whispers staggering back surprised to see the boy who wasn't supposed to be out yet.
"Maeve!" Kazutora yells throwing his arms around her waist pulling her outside the classroom.
"You're coming too!" Kazutora exclaims pulling both of them along.
When they step outside they see two men accompanying Kazutora.
Takemichi gulps before looking straight at Maeve, guilt washing over him.
"Maeve I need to tell you something, it's about Baji," Takemichi gulps ready to face her wrath for withholding such important information.
Maeve automatically grows worried, scared for the boy who went back to not talking to her and just plain avoiding her.
She had even noticed the boy's mood had gotten worse curtesy of Chifuyu telling her and now that she thought about it of course he was irritable, his best friend had gotten out of jail.
She couldn't even begin to count how many times she had to pick up Baji when he had decided to go burn cars.
"Maevey come up here," Kazutora smiles but they all knew it was a clear threat and she gulped how did the sweet boy who used to come to her house after school, before school, even before and after Toman meetings, to reassure her he was okay just to stay there for weeks because he would miss her.
This was the same boy who would always be calling her wanting her to also experience things when she couldn't go.
The way Takemichi gulped, and his eyes widened looking scared for his life, and Kazutora smiled smugly she knew that they both knew something that she didn't know and by the looks of it Takemichi wanted to tell her and Kazutora didn't.
The walk was awkwardly silent apart from the low-key threats Kazutora shot at Takemichi only for him to look frozen and Kazutoras two friend's to advance on him.
And throughout the walk, she would find herself shielding Takemichi and Kazutora when the two boys got too close to them.
"This is Valhalla's base? An arcade?" Takemichi asks what she was wondering ever since they stepped in front of it.
Kazutora turns and smiles at them before entering the arcade. The two hesitantly follow pausing and surveying their surroundings seeing too many people in such a cramped space.
With a nod at each other, they advance Maeve standing in front of Takemichi protectively.
As they were walking closer to the middle they could hear grunts and thumps.
'Animals' is what she thought not saying it in fear of Takemichi getting hurt or even Kazutora for bringing her here.
As they walk closer she sees dark hair, ' it couldn't be' she tries to reassure herself but when she sees the Toman jacket along with the man punching a certain blonde she knows for sure it's Baji.
"I'm sorry," Takemichi whispers when she looks back at him to ask what was happening.
"Chifuyu!" Maeve yells running towards the fighting pair, not able to shoulder it. Sure it wasn't her getting hit but she couldn't even bring it in herself to understand what kind of pain Chifuyu was feeling, after all, the person who was supposed to be his best friend was beating him to a bloody pulp.
Maeve slides to the ground covering Chifuyu's body with her own and the next thing she feels is pain spreading across her cheek, and she doesn't even open her eyes knowing all she'll see is Baj staring down at her, both of them knowing he had hit her, he had broken his promise.
Years ago when he was angry he had promised to never hit her no matter how angry he was and he had kept his promise, until now.
Maeve opens her blurry eyes and doesn't spare Baji a glance knowing he would be glaring down at her.
"Fuyu! God, you idiot how could you let this happen to you," Maeve mumbles frantically, seeing blood on his head.
"Oh my god!" She mumbles ripping a piece of cloth from her shirt and squeezing the boy's head, cursing at his and Baji's stupidity.
"Chifuyu please don't tell me you're dead, you can't be dead," she whispers putting her hand on his neck over his pulse, and when she feels it beat under her hands she feels a weight lift off her shoulders.
"Maevey," Kazutora whispers leaning down to pick her off the floor.
Her eyes meet his and the only thing he could remember was when he had killed Shinichiro.
And for the first time, she found herself glaring at Baji and Kazutora with such hatred, that she had never done even after they had killed her best friend.
Maeve gets up, picking up Chifuyu's limp body, waiting for Takemichi to leave with her because she couldn't leave Takemichi. It would be like leaving him in a lion's den.
"Am I in Valhalla now?" Is the first thing that leaves Baji's mouth raking his hands through his hair, letting his beautiful hair flow down his back.
Just as she had thought the worst part was over they had said something that she didn't quite understand that was until Hanma yelled, "Welcome the new member of Valhalla Keisuke Baji!"
It had just kept on getting worse and Maeve just wanted to leave as soon as possible.
"The summer of 2003," Baji says and she knew they all saw her flinch at what story was coming up.
"I'm leaving," Maeve says grabbing Chifuyu tighter and fast walking out of Valhalla's base.
***
"Maeve-"
"Be quiet Chifuyu," Maeve cuts him off, making the boy more anxious for what was to come, after all, she couldn't even look at him throughout her putting bandages over his face.
"Thank you," Chifuyu whispers hoping he could get her to talk to him, and he thought he succeeded until he heard her grunt a "you're welcome" in response.
Usually, that tactic would have worked considering Maeve lived off of being thanked and appreciated for what she did.
Maeve smiles at her work before telling him he's good to go.
Just as the boy is about to hug her she flicks him on the forehead making the boy wince and her to smirk at him.
"I'm sorry."
"I know," Maeve says grabbing the first aid kit and shoving it under her sink, to say she was still pissed off was an understatement. Maeve didn't care if they were 'protecting' her she was seven years older than them and she had seen way worse.
"I'm going to try to bring Baji back," Chifuyu mumbles looking up at Maeve who was washing dishes.
"Well obviously," Maeve comments rolling her eyes before standing straight and putting the plates back.
