Mirabel was done. Antonio had gotten his gift and everyone was celebrating him. Her own birthday once again being forgotten. Why should she stay? Isabela hated her, her parents faked sympathy most likely, Camilo pretended that she didn't even exist, and the entire town and Abuela acted like she was nothing but a burden. That's what she was, a burden, a freak. Maybe, the family would be better without her, without her giftless curse. As far as she knew, only one other Madrigal wasn't given a gift, but Tía Pietra was long gone. If her tía was still alive or had stayed in the Encanto, maybe Mirabel wouldn't be alone. Mirabel snuck into her mother's kitchen and stole some arepas and little trinkets to remember her family and went back into her room and wrote a note.
"Casita, give me a way out." Mirabel said after packing her bag to leave the Encanto, but Casita was hesitant on letting her leave. "Casita please, just let me go, I don't belong here, you know this." Mirabel said after Casita tried to keep her inside the house, but Mirabel was persistent. Mirabel looked at the floor and tried to leave again but Casita kept trying to keep Mirabel inside but she couldn't stay. She pulled her skirt, making it rip but, she didn't care, all she wanted was to leave and never look back. "I'm sorry Casita, but I have to go." Mirabel said after leaving the house, not noticing a large crack forming as soon as she left.
Mirabel kept walking in the dark of the night and eventually made it to the river where Abuelo Pedro passed away, as soon as she crossed the river, she noticed how the colors changed from bright to dull. She was getting close to the barrier, and she was right, right there was a huge wall made by boulders. She took one final glance at the Encanto and back at the barrier and made up her mind fully, she was going to climb over the barrier that separated the Encanto from the main world. Mirabel climbed and climbed up the barrier and saw lights and heard cheers from miles away, but she only imagined them to be from Antonio's party.
As Mirabel climbed to the top, she saw a whole new world, planes, trains, lights of all sorts. Mirabel took one step forward, just to take a closer look and lost her balance. Mirabel fell, fell, and fell down the barrier and she landed in a pile of bushes, breaking her leg and getting bruises all over her body. Mirabel sat up and finally the pain registered and Mirabel had to try her best not to cry, fearing that she would be found. She finally remembered her mother's arepas and grabbed one and ate it and just like that, all pain went away and her leg began to heal. "So, the arepas work outside the Encanto, but why can I still hear music and cheering?" Mirabel asked herself, becoming intrigued with the outside world. She slowly stood up and began to walk through the thick jungle, the same route Abuela and Abuelo took all those years ago.
Mirabel kept walking, following the sound of music, it wasn't like the music that would play in Encanto, it was a different type of music. Mirabel heard a deep female voice singing as she made it to the tree line and she saw a stadium, flags were hung around saying the same exact thing, 'TYPE O NEGATIVE'. She squinted and looked at the stage, there were four people performing, two on guitars, guitars Mirabel had never seen, one on some sort of piano, but it wasn't that big, not like the one that Casita had, and one person on drums. As the song changed, the crowd began to go wild, it started off slow. The tallest person of the group looked into the crowd, and proved to Mirabel that they weren't a man, like the others, but a woman! A really tall woman. "Everyone sing!" they said as they began to sing to the audience. Mirabel figured that she ought to sit down and rest, after all, she had been walking for hours. She didn't know the band but found herself intrigued with the music and the lyrics. Abuela wouldn't let her listen to this music at all, Camilo and Luisa would probably like it, Isabela would most likely tolerate it. Her parents and Tía Pepa and Tío Felíx would tolerate it as well. Mirabel, she was enjoying the concert, but she couldn't shake the feeling that she may know the lead singer, she just looked, so familiar.
After the concert finished, Mirabel knew she had to leave before security found her, so she quietly turned away and began to run. She wanted to make it to the next town and hopefully find somewhere to stay, maybe get a job. She kept running, and running, still thinking about the band and the lead singer. She looked like her lost tía, she did have Pepa's hair style, her mother's complexion and she wore green like Tío Bruno, no, she wasn't Bruno. Mirabel was so caught up in her thoughts that she didn't hear voices calling out for her. At first, she thought it was just her imagination but, it wasn't, three men and one woman, chasing her. Mirabel ran faster and faster, not even looking at the ground and because of that, she fell down and shielded her face as a light was shined on her. "You a Madrigal?" the woman asked. Mirabel looked up and saw the same band from earlier, and her suspicions were correct, the woman was indeed, her Tía Pietra, Pietra Madrigal, the only other Madrigal who never received a gift from Casita.
