McGonagall led the first years through the Great Hall, stopping just before the stool where the Sorting hat sat. She moved off to the side as the Hat moved and opened what looked like a mouth and started to sing.
McGonagall didn't pay much attention, the Hat came up with a new song each year and it was pointless to remember the lyrics, instead looking at the sea of new students who were staring at the Hat in wonder.
Once the Hat had stopped singing, McGonagall stepped forward holding a long roll of parchment.
"When I call your name, you will put on the Hat and sit on the stool to be sorted."
McGonagall moved down the list, sorting 2 Hufflepuffs and Slytherins, 1 Ravenclaw and Gryffindor before calling out,
"Black, Sirius!"
A few Slytherins sat up straighter and glared at him as he made his way to the stool, gingerly placing the Hat on his head.
The Hat was silent for a minute as Sirius squeezed his eyes shut and seemed to fold in on himself the longer he sat there.
"Gryffindor!" The Hat called and Sirius stood up, gingerly handing the Hat back to McGonagall and slowly walking to sit down at the Gryffindor table, making sure to sit with his back to the Slytherins.
Narcissa started writing a letter as McGonagall continued down the list.
"Collins, Leo!"
"Ravenclaw!"
Catelyn and Eleanor Ensign were both sorted into Ravenclaw as well, Eleanor's sorting taking a bit longer. As she sat down, Catelyn leaned over.
"What took so long?" she whispered, as the Hat called 'Gryffindor' for 'Evans, Lily'.
"It had trouble deciding between Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff." she replied.
McGonagall called 'Fortescue, Alice!' and who walked up to the stool and sat quietly for a few seconds as the Hat figured out where to sort her.
"Gryffindor!"
"Frost, Ember!"
Ember walked up to McGonagall, sitting down with the Hat on. It was quiet for a minute, but when it finally 'spoke', what came out of its 'mouth' was so unexpected, no one knew what to do.
