Leah and Kiera sat next to each other on the bed, only a few centimetres away from each other. They gossiped and talked about everything and anything that was happening in their school.
"Did you know that Henry confessed to Marie in the library?" Leah asked.
"Yes! I wish a boy would confess to me like that one day," Kiera replied. She sighed in wonder, travelling into the land of fiction.
She thought of all the romantic proposals and confessions she had read in books and imagined herself in them.
Leah suddenly straightened herself. As if she was shocked by Kiera's statement.
"Boys are trouble. I'd rather not have any of them confess at all. No matter how romantic, I will never accept any of them. I'd like to stay single for the rest of my life, thank you very much. I know that a lot of boys are probably just attracted to me because of my looks or for money. What's the point of dating if you never know who actually has pure intentions?"
Kiera felt a pang of jealousy at Leah's words. She was really envious of her best friend. While Leah's life was full of boys chasing after her, Kiera's life was monotonous; following the simple schedule of waking up, going to school, going back home, and then going to sleep, and doing all the necessary things in between. Leah also came from a rich family, whereas Kiera's family was well-off. Her family was not poor, just not rich.
She thought, 'No one will ever like me. Leah is gorgeous and perfect while I look like a potato.' She still accepted everything and moved on.
She knew that not everyone was going to be born into a rich family. Not everyone was going to be born with luscious straight dark brown hair that seemed black most of the time. Not everyone was going to be born talented in nearly every field. And that was okay, she was okay. She was not exceptional or anything, she was just okay, and that was all she would ever be.
She sighed, "I guess you're right."
"Of course I'm right! I'm always right," Leah joked and purposely flipped her hair. Both of them burst out laughing.
Kiera could always count on her best friend to make her laugh. Her best friend would always be there for her.
