The Maze Trials [Behind The Scenes]

I had been watching him for some time now, and perhaps I'd never admit it to the others, but considerably more than I'd been watching the other subjects. I couldn't help myself from doing it, it just came naturally. 

It's the runners day off today. Thomas spoke in my head, making me jump out of my trance, and I slowly tore my eyes away from the screen, regretfully at that.

"What?" I questioned, having not really listened and since it was harder to focus when he spoke through our mind-links.

"The runners. It's their day off, guess we'll be stuck watching nothing today, huh?" He sent me a boyish smile and I just shrugged.

"Yeah, nothing." I let my eyes trail back to the blonde boy on the screen.

"You miss him, don't you?" Of course I miss Newt. I miss him every hour of every day, and now he doesn't remember me at all, he doesn't remember anything we had.

"Not so much anymore." I gritted my teeth through the lies. "I'd just like to keep watch over him, maybe then he knows I'm always here."

"But he doesn't remember you, he doesn't remember any of us- none of them do, Pen." Tommy speaks out quietly. 

"Yeah." I mumble in response, focusing back on the screen.

I watched Newt walk across the Glade and noticed he kept his head down, he wandered around as if he didn't have a care in the world. 

I watched as he entered the maze, wishing I had a way to talk to him. "Stop.." I whisper out, seeing him pass through the walls, illuminated by the early morning sunlight. 

What's he doing?

Watch..just watch, I don't know. I was frustrated and blocked Tommy out, even though he did nothing wrong.

Newt dragged his fingers along the stone walls, and I leaned closer in my chair.

I tapped different buttons on my computer, getting rid of any day grievers that could be of risk to him, and I kept the sunlight frozen in place. There was no way I was letting him stay there overnight.

I can't blame Newt for being curious, I'm just a worker but still sometimes want to look inside, often it looks peaceful.

Newt tugged on some vines. He pulled, pulled and pulled before climbing up.

"Do you think he's going to watch the sunrise?" Thomas questioned, leaning over my shoulder.

"It's come and gone." I whisper, frozen as I stared at him.

Newt reached the top and sat for a while, letting his legs dangle off the top. He looked calm, peaceful as he stared out at the glade. "It's okay." He whispered to himself. "You're okay."

He stood up, and I watched him walk along the top of the stone wall, arms outstretched with no apparent cares. "Newt.." I whispered out, inching closer to my screen.

He seemed to take a deep breath, and muttered something that I wasn't focused on hearing before he jumped off of the top of the maze wall.

I was frozen in motion watching him tumble, watching him get tangled in the vines before hitting the bottom.

I hit as many buttons as I could, I tried to do anything and soon Thomas had to wrap both arms around me to restrain me from messing up the Glade because we both knew there was nothing I could do to save Newt's life in this moment.

"Newt." I whisper out, feeling a stray tear drop from my eye.

I couldn't scream or yell, I couldn't hit my computer and scream for Janson to get him medical help, I just stared in shock. "I can't," I whispered to Thomas. "I can't. I can't, I can't..I can't do this." I whisper, my voice breaking.

Newt's leg was trapped in some vines, and he was unconscious just by the maze floor.

My small tear turned into full-blown sobbing, a panic attack taking over just as I saw Minho run into my computer screen and grab Newt.

"It's okay, it's okay." Thomas whispered to me, wiping his own eyes. "It's okay, you're okay."

"I need to go, Tommy, I need to go to the glade." I cried out, letting him soothe me as he held me in his arms. Newt was gone.
