It was your thirteenth birthday you were not very popular so the only person that showed up was your best friend of 7 years. that's right you guys met in kindergarten . You sat at the table. Your family  and your best-friend started to sing happy birthday whilst showering you with gifts. You were overjoyed as you went to open your final gift. "This one is from me," your best-friend called with a devilish grin on her face. You open the small pink box careful not to be to harsh as not to break the contents. You look at your hands and your eyes go wide.

"You got us friendship necklaces, and from my favorite jewelry brand too," you called back as you looked at the small necklace gently laying there in your hand.  You are to stunned to speak farther you tie the braided string choker around your neck as does your best-friend. You swore you would never ever take it off.

-few months-

It was the first day of junior high. You and your best friend looked each other straight into the eyes. As you held out your pinkies crossing them you both said in complete synchronization " besties forever for worse or for better nothing can break us forever and ever our necklace we wear protects us from fear and until they break we still hold dear." You had come up with this chant on your birthday right after she had gifted you the necklace. You both headed off to the building she was in the right wing you were in the left. Your class was full of boys. You walk in and your teacher introduces you to the class and tells you to find an open seat. As you sit down a guy passes you and looks straight into your eyes. But it feels deeper then your eyes, your soul maybe. You felt something inside you, and you can tell he could feel it too, something clicked as you locked eyes, magical almost? You told your best friend about it but she said you probably took it different then him and she said you shouldn't stay stuck on it for to long. You wondered why she was so rude. Could she be jealous? She had like ten boyfriends before and she had tons of friends so why would she be jealous of you? You look down at your feet as you enter the school the next day. You sit at your desk in silence . Then that guy comes in again and something compels you to lift your head your eyes meet again and like clockwork that tingling sensation rolls through your body. Then your best friend walks in behind him. The teacher talks and says " It's the second day of school and we already have a new student well I mean not new to the school but new to this wing so everybody politely welcome Madeline."

"I thought you couldn't change classes?" You say to her.

"I just had to beg a little ," she says sitting into the seat back left of yours right by that guy. You don't even know his name but you feel this claim. You try to focus but you see your best friend trying to make small talk to this guy. The every time she tries he shuts her down but still why can't she just stop? Like get the memo? The next day you sit down and the guy sits directly left of you instead of behind you and your "best friend " sits directly left of him. He looks at you and tries to strike up a conversation you quickly get interested in what he has to say. Your best friend is sending you death glares. She could have any boy of her choice why the only one you have any interest in. You talk to him but every time you look slightly past him you see her giving you a deadly stare. After class you try to confront her about her behavior even though you are not the confrontational type. She gives you a sad sap excuse about how she just wants to see if he actually likes you. You know this isn't true. As you lay in bed tossing and turning you allow your thought to drift around and you realize she is using you. She has been since she met you. She used you as a charity case. To make herself look better. You stand up and walk into your bathroom. You look in your mirror. You take your old rusted scissors and cut the braided string. You look at your bare neck.
"I'm not your charity case anymore."
