we both sat against the brick wall on the rooftop. she sat not too far beside me where it would seem like we were too disgusted to sit beside each other but also not too close to invade our personal space.

it was quiet and awkward at first. but carmen was the first to break the silence.

"why do you come up here?" she asked.

"to get away." i shrugged, not minding if i sounded like one of those troubled protagonists in cliche books. "why did you come up here?"

carmen mirrored my action, shrugging before lighting a cigarrete she just found in one of the pockets of her leather jacket. she puffs.

"people don't just come up on rooftops for no reason." i said quietly, more to myself than to carmen but she heard me anyway.

she scoffed. "i'm carmen mathers, i do what i want. i don't need to have a reason."

oh but i know she does.
