"Nick, what's going on?" I asked, making my way over to him and Merwin. I stepped over the dissembled tripwire, which I found a bit odd. Who had set that up? Was it that Iraqi soldier that Eric had mentioned? It certainly wasn't the architects.
"We heard, Joey!" Merwin exclaimed, but was immediately shut down by Nick who said, "We thought we heard, Joey."
Merwin narrowed his eyes at the Sergeant. "It's Joey, all right. I know that guy like the back of my hand. It's him."
"You may know Joey, but all we heard was screaming. Joey died in my arms.." Nick answered, which was a very good point. It's hard to mistake a person's death, especially when you're holding them.
"You doubting me, marine?" Merwin asked, taking a step towards Nick, whilst Nick faced Merwin head on, with a scoff. "You wanna go? Right here, right now?" Nick threatened, which was only winding Merwin up more.
"Men, cut it out! Now!" I ordered, and they both obeyed, reluctantly.
I gave them both a few seconds to compose themselves before asking them both "Ya' good?"
Merwin gave a slight nod, while Nick muttered a quiet "Yeah."
The Corporal took a step towards me, "Lieutenant, one of our own is down there!" Merwin explained, in a much more dignified manner than before.
"So are a bunch of monsters that want to rip us apart, but do with that information what you will." Nick added, not in a spiteful way, but in a “I'm so done with this place” kind of way.
"He's our brother!" Merwin exclaimed, and this seemed to surprise even, Nick. Marines were family. We don't leave men behind.
As Lieutenant, it was my job to get my team out, and that's what I intended on doing. I just needed to keep the team together. Arguing was only going to weaken the connection, and I needed everyone getting along, or we would not make it out, alive.
I nodded my head, "The way I see it, we got one of our own men down there. We're not leaving him behind." I decided, which seemed to please the Corporal. Nick bit the inside of his cheek but he remained respectful and calm, "Yes, Lieutenant." he said, gripping his gun tighter.
I gave orders, and a moment later, we were heading down the the narrow tunnel, in search of our Lance Corporal, Joey Gomez.

"You okay?" the Colonel asked, coming to stand in front of me. I had been staring at the same spot on the wall for the last half hour, wanting to cry, but then wondering why I even had tears to shed in the first place. I felt stupid and weak, so I held my emotions in.
"Uh, yeah. . . it's nothing." I shrugged, wiping my hands down my pants legs, to try to rid the sweat from my palms.
"You know. . . I'm not very good at this kind of. . . stuff." Eric said, gesturing to the space between he and I. "-but if you need someone to talk too about anything. . . Anything at all." he explained, giving a weak smile.
"Thanks, Eric! I appreciate it." I answered, and only a moment later, Eric was sat beside me on the hard, cool stone surface.
"I couldn't help but notice that Kolchek has his eye on you." Eric explained, and I felt my body tense. I'm pretty sure the flinch was visible.
