"JASON!" I called out, hoping the God's would show some form of mercy, and allow me just a moment of peace and relief. Just to hear the sound of one of my fellow comrades voices, or to see the familiar smile upon one of their faces. Oh to hear one of Merwin's inappropriate jokes, or to be called “ma'am” by Jason in his robotic tone once more, would be an absolute sure shine of hope.
But, alas, it was silent. I was almost certain that whatever God was up there, was looking down on me and laughing, cruelly.
"JASON?! MERWIN?! NICK?! ANYBODY?!" I called out again, wishing to hear from someone. Anyone.
Part of me was screaming to get out of this place. To make it to the surface and escape with, Salim.
Perhaps he could take me back to his home. . .? I could wash myself up, change my dressings, rest up; and maybe even sit down to a meal with Salim, and his son, Zain, who I had come to know much about, thanks to his loving father's many conversations and sad rants.
Yes, that idea kept coming to mind, and it seemed more and more appealing each time I thought it. . . But then I'd scold myself for thinking such a thing. My Team was down here, and I planned on finding them. I just hoped the condition I found them in, wouldn't be a sight I would come to regret seeing.
However, I needed to be smart as well. I only had enough water and provisions to last me so long; and eventually my medical supplies and equipment would run thin.
I hobbled through the dark, dusty caves, with no light except that that shone from my make-shift torch. The flame flickered and danced, sometimes becoming so dull that I worried it would burn out and leave me in complete darkness; - but it never did.
As I rounded a corner, I could have swore I heard a faint clicking noise, and my blood ran cold.
I immediately held my breath, as I pressed my back against the hard, stone wall. Prepared for something to make it's appearance, as I strained my ears to hear any sign of movement.
I suddenly became very aware of the torch in my hand, and worried for the attention I would be drawing to myself if one of those creatures decided to come strolling by. Shit.
I instinctively held the wooden branch tighter in my grasp, but lowered it so that the flame lit up only a small patch of the ground around my feet. What felt like an eternity, eventually passed, but was realistically only a couple minutes.
When no other sounds were heard, and no sign of movement was detected in the distance, I let myself relax a little, and finally released the breath I had been holding in. I stepped away from the cool stone wall and back out on the main path.
"I gotta keep my head on, stay strong, and be clever about this. I can't freak out and run for the hills the minute a little bit of noise scares me." I told myself, in a hushed tone, as my heart rate slowly settled back down.
I took a couple steps forwards, as a loud scream pierced through the air, followed by the sound of struggling and someone shouting.
Soldiers. I thought.
Maybe it was Jason and the others.
Hope and anticipation sparked my motivation, as I broke out into staggered run in the general direction that the sound had come from.
Despite my buggered ankle, and my general exhaustion; I couldn't help but be a little too hopeful, as I rushed towards the noise.I rounded a few corners, and after what felt like an eternity of running, I came to a clearing, and the sight I saw, was haunting.
Jason was dangling over the cliff face, atop of a broken wooden beam, that was being held up by a few rusted old wires, that looked as though they'd snap at any given time.
And to make matters worse, there was a disfigured creature, that looked half bat, and half human, trying to attack Jason.
