"Does anyone remember where the light switches were?" Frypan points out. I'm about to make a stupid comment about light switches being the first thing you search for, when Newt speaks up.
"That's where I'm heading." Newt explains. Oh Newt. "I swear, I remember seeing a set of them somewhere over here." He continues. I can see shadows of figures around the room, since my eyes have adjusted to the dark better now, but I'm still not clear about anything in the room. The others have the advantage of having been here yesterday, but I haven't been outside my room and theirs at all.
"Found it!" Newt shouts, sounding relieved. A few clicking sounds are heard and the room is suddenly filled with blinding, fluorescent lights. My vision takes a moment to adjust, and when it does, I gasp loudly. The room is as large as the Gladers mentioned, but apparently, there's been some changes regarding decoration. People are hung from the ceiling - at least 12 of them. They've been hung by the neck, with stiff rope twisting around their skin. I don't even want to begin explaining how bloated and purple it is. This is due to the lack of oxygen and blood flow. Every person has their eyes wide open, as if the person who hung them did this on purpose. All normal eye colours. Brown, hazel, green, blue... By the way they look, they can't have been here any longer, or shorter, than a couple hours. Their clothes and faces look excruciatingly familiar though, and when I notice who they are, I feel like fainting. Our rescuers.
Thomas falls to his knees and I rush to his side, kneeling in front of him. He looks pale, a lot more so than usual.
"Tom?" I ask, looking into his dark brown eyes, worriedly. "Are you okay?" When he doesn't reply, I frown. "Can you hear me?" It takes Thomas a moment to focus again, but he nods hesitantly. I sigh, leaning forward and pecking his lips quickly before making my way over the Newt, Minho and Thomas soon joining us. Minho's clearly swearing under his breath and a few Gladers are gagging, spitting or throwing up from the sight. I would, but I don't have enough nutrition in my stomach to bring anything up, which is totally fine.
"Tommy?" Newt speaks up. "What's bloody wrong with you?"
"What..." Thomas stutters. "What do you think? Look around us!"
"Yeah, but you looked like you were in pain or something." Newt points out. It's true. The way Thomas looked as if he could barely breathe, and how I thought he might have been choking or something.
"What do we do now?" Frypan inquires, earning silence as answer.
"There was a woman." I speak up. "She doesn't look like she's in here. In fact, I didn't see her until she told me there's a button I should press if I need any help." I recall.
"Do you think she killed them?" Thomas asks, pointing around the room, looking as sick as I feel."I don't know." I confess. "But it's a start."
"She's right." Minho agrees. "Alright shanks, spread out and find her!"
"Might've already." I say, walking towards the room I was in last night. I reached for the handle, but it didn't budge - completely locked. There's a small, clear plastic display hanging on the wall to the right that I didn't even notice last night. A sheet of paper is slipped into the small, eight-centimeter square slot with letters typed onto it.Kaya Lee. Group A, Subject A1.
The Brains."Kaya Lee?" I repeat, furrowing my brows.
"That's who you're named after, I guess." Newt points out. "She was a famous American politician and diplomat. Iconic, really." he explains. "I guess you're not named after a Scientist like the rest of us." I nod, but something really bugs me. Group A? Subject? The Brains? Who labeled me like that? Only WICKED would call us things like that, so why is that there now?
"Hello? Calling Thomas? Kaya? Not a good time to daydream. Lots of dead bodies, smell like Frypan's pits. Wake up." Minho snaps his fingers in front of our faces, making me turn around to face him.
"Sorry." Thomas apologizes. "Just thought it was a little weird what It says about Kaya."
"Yeah. The Brains, that was clear. She's obviously the smartest person I've ever shuckin' met." Minho comments.
"But what's Group A, Subject A1?" Newt asks, handing Thomas a fire extinguisher. "Anyway, your turn to break the buggin' door handle." He adds and I frown. Thomas eventually grabs it and goes crazy on the door, slamming it into the door knob, hard. The sound of metal smashing against metal chimes around my ears and I wince at the sound. He then throws the fire extinguisher to the side and grabs the door, swinging it out of the way.
