content warning: forced drugging
Being a hero sucked in every way possible, but at least his "hero suit" was, as the kids in that one high school called it, "fly."
Nostos hates the commissioner, hates Max, and fucking dies (?)
SIX HOURS BEFORE NOSTOS DISAPPEARED
BY ALL MEEANS, WALING OUT OF THE BRIEFING WAS NOT A SMART IDEA, especially since his handler was only going to be tougher on him during training.
Well, not a handler . The Manberg Department of Enhanced Defense would never use such dehumanizing language for its employees. Officially, they were commanders, though their efficacy left something to be desired. He's heard a lot of stories of other heroes and their commanders clashing in various ways. Hell, it wouldn't be a day in the office without hearing some sort of screaming match wafting through the walls.
Which brings Nostos to the now, him stomping down the halls back to his office while Maxwell the Asshole tries to do some damage control. It was a ridiculous briefing anyway, being a high-profile hero should not mean that he takes these risks, but he wasn't really a hero was he?
To the Department of Enhanced Defense, the heros were only assets, but that name stuck as well as rain droplets to waxed boots. When the Domestic Defense program first took off, the media relished in having real life heroes ( superheros! ) in Manberg and ran with it. The DED was nothing but a bystander to the craze, but it brought in good publicity and that's all that really mattered, wasn't it? It's why assets were treated like crap and forced to go on missions that were nothing more than a death sentence. It's why Nostos made a scene and stormed out of the room, it's why he refuses to be a toy for the "Big Guy '' to play with.
The briefing was nothing short of insanity; the commissioner himself came down to the capital city to hand-deliver Nostos the suicide mission. He was called to a small room full of Commissioner Jordan's personal detail along with a stenographer and an agent from the legal wing, as per protocol. Nostos and his handler were the last to enter it, and Nostos himself could feel himself sink into the floor as soon as he saw the manila files on the table and the diagrams projected onto the screen.
The commissioner cleared his throat and described the "unique" situation the Domestic Defense unit was in considering there hadn't been a streak of crime and potential threats in months. Which to Nostos was a good thing. There was keeping him under the DED's eye and he could actually go home for more than an hour a day (Not to mention the nanny was starting to get suspicious of his constant "business trips." She said as much before demanding a raise, which Nostos was happy to indulge). But to the commissioner, it meant less funding from the federal government and less active media coverage.
