yedam started winking uncontrollably after looking at the sky for too long. he had to lower his gaze, fighting off the black dots disturbing his sight now. the view from his balcony displayed the main gate distant for several meters, isolating the palace from the potential intruders. behind the enormous, iron doors the silhouettes of the buildings where people of the country lived could be seen. although yedam must have put extra effort, standing by the railing and craning his neck to admit that some life really existed there. the prince has never dared to disobey his father and so never left the palace premises. the king taught him that the world out there is dangerous, and if it is not necessary it's not worth putting the life at risk. as the royal family they all had enemies even if they don't know their faces, don't know their names. there is and always will be at least one person who would envy them the imperial blood rushing through their vines.

"prince yedam."

amiable man's voice made the boy snap out of his thoughts. he let go of the railing he had had his hands clenched around, and looked behind. the boy dressed in linen, beige material signifying his position of a servant, had his body bent in a half. the slightly longer bangs on both sides of his forehead were now hanging down, the tips prettily curved by nature.

his name was yoon jaehyuk and he was the middle prince's own servant. older for a year, kind, a custodial boy born in a poor family which he couldn't even remember was raised here in a palace with his destiny written from the very beginning. he was told at the age of five that one day he will take care of one of the most valuable human beings in the whole country, and so following experienced servants, watching their routines, skills, and discovering all the nooks of the castle, he grew up to be yedam's closest and one friend.

"prince, forgive me. the king and his two sons are awaiting you in the dining room. please mind coming. your father sent me to pass this information."

yedam let out an "oh" sound, nodding lightly. he didn't want the other to get in trouble for not coming back with a desperately needed figure, so he left behind his elaborations and memories brought up a minute ago, directing to the respective place of the palace.

the servant was loyally following him, keeping the required distance of five steps. he couldn't be the one to lead – if someone turned their backs to the member of a royal family it would be an act of disrespect. such behavior according to the rules must have been punished by one of the manifolds of the listed suggestions. double work, prison, exile – were the least horrifying. yedam saw jaehyuk almost as a brother from another mother and father and so he would never let him be prosecuted for any negligence.

the king doted on his children so much that he made all of the people treat them like fragile, invaluable butterflies if touched too harshly, could suffer deep injuries. and so there were two camps – the ones who saw them as gods, and the ones who were afraid to get any closer.
