As Kari walked down the ice-glazed sidewalk, locals gawked at her and whispered behind their wet mittens. "She's never out," one of the kids muttered. "Something must be happening in that traitorous family." Kari whirled around and glared in the direction of the mutterers. Their whisperings were quickly hushed.

As Kari continued down the sidewalk, she noticed now, more than ever, how afraid the other children were of her. Kari braced herself and slogged on.

After nearly falling five times and getting snickered at twice, Kari was getting more and more snappy with the other children, who seemed to be following her. She contemplated how she could escape the children who were following her as she watched the sidewalk for any slippery spots. Any alleyways were ruled out- those were always iced over thick as frosting on a triple-decker cake. Kari thought that going through the small wood on the north side of Spring's Wonder would have a good probability of escape. As she pondered this, a cold, wet ball of slush hit her square in the back. Kari whirled around and scooped up a ball of slush to get the thrower back. She scanned the ice-coated street, looking for her attacker. Just then, she saw a shape flit around in the corner of her eye. Kari turned her head to get a better look.

No one was there. She shrugged it off, dropping her slush ball. It was probably just a stray leaf blowing in the wind, she thought. Kari continued down the street, keeping an eye out for any snowball ambushers.

After walking for about twenty-five minutes (Spring's Wonder was rather small) Kari came to the small north wood. Most in the town believed the north wood to be a magical place full of witches and trickery. In Spring's Wonder, magic was a curse.

Scanning the frost-coated landscape, Kari noticed a set of footprints in the icy grass. Not thinking, she decided to follow them.

After trekking through the wood, it was getting dark and noticeably colder. Kari's thin raincoat was barely keeping out the wind and not keeping out the cold. Kari was beginning to despair. What if I never make it out, she worried, what if I'm stuck here? As she trudged through the chilling slush, a light came into view. Crazed, Kari ran toward it. As she neared the light, she tripped over a log. Skidding over the frosted grass, Kari tumbled out into a clearing. In the clearing stood an old house, so covered in frost that it seemed to be made of frozen crystals itself.
