Chapter 4:Hard Times

My mother was slowly recovering. She was stabbed in the side and knocked out. Ethan would be in jail for a while. He pleaded not guilty saying that my mother did it to herself. He said she didn't want to be around anymore, but my mother would never do that to herself. Toby would go home from the hospital soon. I understood how he felt. I knew that he didn't want to go home to his father. School wasn't much of an issue though. I sat on Toby's porch waiting. Waiting to see him and his mother. His father knew I was here, but he didn't care.

When I saw Toby's mom pull up in the drive way I could see Toby. He was looking through the car window with a blank look on his face. His skin looked pale and he looked beaten up. His father stood up with his arms out ready to greet them, but they just walked past him. Toby walked by himself into the house.

"You should go home, Ashley. Toby needs some rest, but feel free to come by tomorrow to check up on him." His mother seemed upset. I went home as she asked and I sat in the kitchen looking around. Remembering the scene of the burglary. I was upset. Ethan would pay for this one way or another, I would make him pay for this. I went up to my bedroom and looked to see if anything was missing. Nothing was gone, except my mother. She was in the hospital and my sister wouldn't answer any of my calls. It was like she didn't care anymore. I decided to just take a shower. Nothing could help me. First Toby was in a car crash then my mother is in the hospital. I just sat on the shower floor, crying which was something I didn't do often. I missed my mom, I missed my sister. She never called us ever since she left. The last thing I saw of her was the letter she left. The letter that was left the day she decided to live somewhere else. Life was getting hard, but it could be a lot worse. I could be homeless or poor and starving.
