it was cold. too cold. too cold for a nineteen year old to be out anyways. it was dark, windy, a little cloudy, enough to make small drops of rain fall here and there, not enough to get someone wet, but enough to get them annoyed, begging for it not to get harder.

the only light on the dark streets were the dim lights, all spaced five metres apart on the long pavements that followed the road.

there was a brisk wind, as it was only early march, causing the young girl to pull her old, torn blanket round her shoulders tighter, shivering slightly as she watched the cars drive by.

there weren't too many out because of how late it was, the streets near-enough dead at the late hour. tiffany was glad at how quiet it was, thankful that only a few unfortunate people would see her appearance.

an old ripped graphic tee, light-grey skinny jeans that now was a dark brown colour, beaten up black converse, anr her unbrushed, scraggy hair pulled into two plaits on either side of her face. the green in her hair had long ago faded, leaving her with her natural brown hair, loose ends coming undone and blowing softly in the wind.

as she continued walking back to 'her spot', she sighed, shivering again as the cold got to her bones, forcing her to huddle deeper into the grimy blanket that was engulfing her. nothing could stop the cold though, not on a night like this, a night that felt like it could go on forever, even sleep couldn't speed it up.

as she reached the side of town, she made her way over to a cute little bakery, that always smelled so nice in the early mornings. she shuffled round to the back of the building, behind all the dustbins, and grabbed a discarded cinnamon bun and a tiger bread roll from a box of leftovers that had been dumped ontop of the dustbin.

she stuffed them into her little bag before climbing up the ladder attached to the side of the building, leading to the roof. soon enough she'd climbed to the top and she spotted her little make-shift camp site covered in an old piece of tarpaulin, hidden from the park on the other side of the road due to the tall walls that ran around the flat roof.

tiffany quickly made her way over to her 'bedroom' and quickly pulled of the tarpaulin, thankful that she had found it as it kept everything of hers dry. her old, beaten up mattress that she had found a few months ago, at the same time as finding this hide-out. why anyone would leave a mattress ontop of a roof was beyond the girl, but she wasn't one to complain as it was still comfy enough. there was also a small bag of food, which she quickly added the rolls to, another two blankets that came with the mattress, and a bag of clothes that she either found or were her old ones.

she sighed as she landed ontop of the mattress, quickly lying down and pulling another blanket over her freezing body. as she closed her eyes to try and get some sleep, she prayed to whoever would listen that it wouldn't always be like this. it's been two years too many, and to be frank, she was sick of it.

"irwin!" shouted a voice, making the boy turn around, smiling as soon as he saw his best friend, michael, walking towards him

"clifford!" he laughed, hugging his mate in the dark street.

"it's been too long!"

"yeah yeah, i know. and im sorry i kept brushing you off, work has been mental man, im so done with it." sighed the oldest boy, scratching at the back of his neck as they began to walk towards their favourite park.

"ash, why don't you just quit already? you hate working there, and there are so many other things you could do. you have a college degree. why not do something with that, or do you want to be waiting tables in a cafe for the rest of your life?" ashton's younger friend stated, turning round and walking backwards along the pavement so he could face his friend.
