"y/n wake up!" Ava yelled through the closed door.

You had the same daily routine. You woke up, brushed your teeth, got dressed, ate breakfast, then waited for Ava to come and pick you up. You did the same thing every morning all of Junior year, except for today.

"y/n we're gonna be late!"

You were never late, you could never afford to be late. You weren't especially wealthy growing up so you had to work harder than most in school to get a scholarship so that college wouldn't cost as much. To do that you had to maintain the top grades in your class and for that to happen you couldn't be late, so why was it so hard to get up now?

flashback

"Okay Ava, if f(x) equals 5 - 2x, then f-1(- 3) is equal to what?"

"hmm, gimme a sec"

Ava wrote down the equation on the scrap piece of paper filled with at least 30 other problems. You didn't know how she had room to fit another. It took her about 2 minutes to figure out, but once she got it she circled the answer and showed you.

"3!" Ava yelled proudly while pointing to the paper.

"That is...correct!" you drew out the response to add to her anticipation.

"Okay now for your problem y/n." Ava took the question and answer packet from your hand and scanned through the problems looking for the hardest one she could find.

"This is gonna be a hard one so it's worth double points," she mentioned

Ava always seemed to give you the harder questions because she knew you were more up for the challenge, but that never bothered you in the end because that meant more practice for you.

"If f(x) = ln(x + 1) - 2, then f-1(x) equals what?" Ava asked with a smirk seeing your face scrunch up.

Questions like these never stumped you, but it was getting later into the session, your lack of sleep was catching up to you, and math wasn't the last subject you had planned on studying that night.

After working out the problem for a few minutes you came up with your answer.

"The answer is ex + 2 - 1," you responded as confident as ever

"that is incorrect," Ava said with a disappointed look on her face.

You looked at her in disbelief staring at her face to see if you could spot any signs of her lie. Looking over your paper many times you came to the conclusion she was messing with you.

"that's the right answer is it not!?" you questioned her confused on why she had said it was incorrect.

"it is the right answer, I just wanted to see you go crazy," Ava said with a smirk on her face.

"you're not funny," you said with a smile on your face as you hit her arm. "I actually thought I got that one wrong for a sec."

ahh, so that's why you were so exhausted. You rolled around in bed trying to get as many more seconds of sleep as you could before you had to wake up to even have the possibility of making it to school on time. You had noticed the yelling on the other side of the door had stopped realizing that meant that Ava had given up on her attempt at waking you up. You checked your phone as it read 7:39 AM. School started at 8 and the drive from your house wasn't too long, but it could be with the right amount of traffic. Trying your best to get ready for school and not be marked tardy for the first period, you slid out of bed and went to go brush your teeth.
