Darkest Night

'Twas darkest night and absent was the light.

"Be not afraid," my father said to me,

"the light will always shine in darkest night."

I did not listen well, but he was right.

I never felt as though I would be free.

'Twas darkest night and absent was the light.

I tried for far too long to find my might.

What father said before, that was the key:

"the light will always shine in darkest night."

I realize now what really shines so bright:

that flash of green reflected in the sea.

'Twas darkest night and absent was the light.

I swam in sunset cold with ample fright,

but endless were the colors there, you see.

"The light will always shine in darkest night."

For once, I saw much more than black and white.

To best the dark, just heed my father's plea.

'Twas darkest night and absent was the light.

"The light will always shine in darkest night."
