River's POV
"Oooh, got you beat now, River!" I groan in frustration as Luke sinks one last shot before the buzzer goes off on the Hoop Shoop, one of the arcade games at Wahooz, the "family fun" center that the boys took me to under the pretenses of Laser Tag. There is Laser Tag, but there is also go-karts, arcade games, mini-golf, a water something or other, and a water park nearby. Also, the staff said that they would kick everyone out around nine thirty so we could have to the place to ourselves. Apparently, Destiny knows the manager here.
At the moment, where the two ooey-gooey freaking lovebirds are, I have no idea. Instead, I'm more focused on trying to get into the Laser Tag arena once the everyone leaves at nine-thirty. The employees are starting to push people toward the exits. Each time one of them comes over to us, we show them a special badge that Destiny's friend gave us and they leave us alone. We look over to the Laser Tag line and see that Gordon and Destiny are doing extreme PDA in the line. I grit my teeth and turn back to Riley, Luke, and Jack, who are all near me. I smile at them and jerk my chin toward the Laser Tag arena. They all nod and we head over to the Laser Tag line.
As soon as we walk over, Gordon looks up at me and he narrows his eyes, as if he's angry at me. His grip on Destiny tightens and he pulls her closer to her, kissing her directly on the lips right in front of me. I swallow, hopefully not noticeably to anyone around me, and I look away from them. Why does he act like this every time Destiny is around? It must have something to do with that conversation on the football field earlier today...
"You guys ready?" the worker asks. The boys whoop and holler and the worker opens the gates for us to go in. We all rush in and immediately split into two sides. Riley walks over with me, followed by Luke, Jack, B.B., Rich, a kid from the football team named William Ryder, and Ryan. Gordon and Destiny walk to the opposite side, followed by Daniel Bright, Mason Jones, Austin Stevens, Brady Hunter, Sebastian Young, and Kameron. We all begin to pull our vests on. I help when my hair gets caught on one of the latches I can't reach.
"Here, let me help," Riley says, sounding like an exasperated older brother. He gently brushes most of my ponytail out from on the vest and over my shoulder, his warm fingertips brushes over the bare skin around my neck. He then gently untangles my hair from the latch. Once he's done, I quickly pull my hair up into a bun and stick it through with two bobby pins. I grab my gun from the pocket where I got the vest and untwist the tube that links it up to my vest.
"Alright, considering that I've seen you all around here a few times," the worker says, specifically looking toward Riley. "I'll take it that most of you know how to play. What teams do you want to be?"
"Red!" Riley shouts almost immediately and the worker laughs.
"Of course you do. Alright, Red Team, you head in first. Your station is at the other side of the arena." He opens the door to the arena and Riley leads us in. I've only ever been in a Laser Tag arena twice, and this sure does not look like anything I've very seen before.
A fog machine fills the room with white fog as a black light fills through room. Star walls line the outside of the room and glowing red and green flecks line the black carpet underneath us. There is a second level with the same carpet. When we first walk in, there are large green and black pillars, along with some panels of green and black as well. It is the same for the second level. In the middle of the back wall where we walk in, there is a square without its fourth side and there are small black boxes in the middle of the upper horizontal pillars that it is made out of, each with 100 in analog clock numbers. As we continue walking, the red side of the room seems to be the exact same with the three fourths of a box and the pillars, as well as the upper portion on this half of the room. Riley leads us behind one of the flat panels and I see a computer screen on it with a bunch of Star Wars/ Lord of the Rings/ DC and Marvel comic book characters' names on them. They each have numbers next to them. I look at the number on my vest and see that I am Arwen from Lord of the Rings. I smile happily. I also notice that there are point totals next to the names.
