Carlette was just finishing cleaning when her phone rang.
"Hello, good afternoon."
"Hi, good day, is this Miss McCarty?"
"Speaking." "Miss McCarty, we are calling in response to your resumé, we would like to have an interview with you tomorrow at 9am sharp, please don't be late.""Okay, thank you."
The phone call ended with a beep. Carlette viewed the number closely before closing her phone.
I truly hope I succeed with this job. At least it'll keep my butt occupied.
Rick, Maryanne.
The act, only committed a couple days ago, wounded her deeply.
And to think that you wanted to marry this man Carlette. What a joke indeed. The betrayal of her sister though. Maryanne had everything that she could ever wanted, their parents made sure to help when needed, however, when it came to relationships, no one intervened. They all learnt the hard way. But why would she do something like this?
The pain hit her from nowhere. Carlette grasped the counter all the while struggling to breathe.
What was this? Something was wrong. Her instincts were screaming at her; help. She grabbed her phone and dialed her mother's number. Once, twice it rang then:
"Hello?"
"Mom how are you, is everything okay?"
"Carly? What is it baby? Yes everything's fine over here."Carlette relaxed a bit.
"What is it honey?"
"Nothing mom, just calling to check in in you.""Oh okay, like I said everything is fine, your dad and I are taking things easy. You know."
Her mother sounded normal enough, however Carlette noticed her voice sounded more strained than usual. Nothing major, because she was looking out for danger however, it was noticeable.
"Mom, you sure you're okay. You sound kind of strained."
" Oh Carlette, you always worry too much, I'm just a little tired, just finished up from the kitchen when you called. However, you don't sound alright. Carly baby what's going on."
"I'm okay mom, just checking in on you and dad. Haven't called in a bit." She was too anxious to talk to her mom properly. Deciding to end the conversation. Carlette said a hurried goodbye to her mother and that she'll call her later.
She was still in pain though. The only other person that she could think about was Maryanne. And after what had happened , she wasn't too keen on calling her.
But what if her life is in danger, and something terrible happened to her, it would play on your mind for the rest of your life.
True. Damn. Sometimes she really hated her inner voice.
Screwing up her courage, Carlette dialed her sister's number, suppressing every emotion that wanted to rise and choke her. On the second ring the phone picked up."Hello?"
That certainly wasn't her sister's voice, nor was it remotely female."Hi, is Maryanne around by chance?"
"Yeah, one second."
There was a moment of silence and then,
"Hello?"
"Maryanne, are you okay?"
"Carlette?!"
"Yeah it's me. Is everything fine by you?"
Maryanne sounded surprised. She might as well be, considering what she had done.
"Yeah I'm good actually. Is everything okay."
Carlette couldn't help the sigh of relief that escaped her mouth. At least her family was safe. Maryanne, immediately picked up on it. Whenever Carlette called. It was usually important.
Carlette turned towards the window just as it shattered and something pierced her neck.
"Fucking hell."
Her body began to numb and soon she couldn't talk. She could however hear her sister screaming her name on the phone. Her eyesight began to blur. Is this what death feels like?
The last thing Carlette saw was a pair of black boots standing in front of her.
