Selene laid in her bed for a while, staring onto the ceiling. Eventually, her crying stopped, but her eyes were red, bloodshot and burning like hell.

She wasn't sure if she ever cried that long. At least, she couldn't remember.

For hours, her mind drifted back to James' words, occasionally looking at that god forsaken picture. She knew it was manipulated. That it's fake. But her mind just couldn't figure out how to prove that. And James dismissed her, shooed her away.

It hurt her immensely that he wouldn't let her talk. That she did not even get the opportunity to talk some sense into him, reassure him, that it is not real. But he wouldn't hear her. He was blinded and consumed by his anger, believing that stupid picture and not her. The woman he claimed to love.

Selenes heart ached, felt heavy. Like a rock deep in her chest. Her face hurt just as much, the hourly long crying causing it.

Yet, she knew she had to proceed with her plan. No matter how much she was hurting. And how much it would hurt.

Walking over to her little desk, she opened her MacBook, clicking onto „Word" to prepare a new text.

Termination

Dear Mr. Barnes,

due to recent events, I consider this employment relationship not bearable for both parties.

All things considered, I am compelled to terminate the employment relationship between Barnes&Wilson Law and myself, Ms. Selene Dixon.

I am asking for a severance payment to compensate for overtime worked and the holiday entitlement that I am still entitled to.

I would like to thank you for the many years of good cooperation.

I wish you only the best for the future.

Ms. Selene Dixon.

She printed the document, wrapping it accordingly in an envelope. Causing another tear to roll down her cheek.

Silently, she gathered everything she would need and left her room. Sneaking through the apartment, as not to wake up Wanda and Pietro, she grabbed her jacket and carefully stepped outside into the hallway.
