Accident or Rip?

Voight had just gotten to the 21st and sat down in his office with a cup of coffee and some paperwork when he got an urgent text from someone. 'Voight, It's Jay, Hailey got into some kind of car crash. We're at Med right now, get the team here this one doesn't make much sense' read the text. Voight gasped, covering his mouth with his hand in shock. 'On our way' Hank messaged back instantly. He jumped up and grabbed his jacket off the hook before calling out to Kim and Adam who were indulged in paperwork at their respective desks. "Guys we gotta go, Hailey's been injured, we're gonna meet her and Jay at Med" he shouted to the officers whilst grabbing his keys and and rushing out of the office toward the parking lot. Kim stood up as soon as she heard her boss' tone "Oh my god" Kim whispered looking to Adam who was already looking at her "OK I'll call Kev, pull the Jeep around I'll be right there" Adam suggested picking up his phone and running down the stairs. Kim took hold of her coat and hurried off after Voight.

"Will! Where are they?" Voight asked running into the busy ED with Kim and Adam right behind him. "Treating her right now!" Dr. Halstead replied taking gauze from a cart and jogging into Trauma 3. The three of them walked over to the trauma bay where they saw doctors and nurses covering Hailey in blankets and taking x-rays of her chest. Adam turned around to talk to the charge nurse "Maggie what's going on? Is she gonna be ok?" Adam asked her. "At the moment she's still hypothermic and she did swallow a lot of water which she has coughed it up, but we're still unsure of how extensive the damage is" Maggie replied while tapping away at the tablet. "I thought it was a car accident?" Voight asked confused as to why Hailey was hypothermic. "It was" Maggie said with a stern look on her face "They found the cars in the river". Adam, Kim and Voight exchanged glances. "What the hell happened here..." Kim trailed off looking over to where Jay was standing completely still, watching Hailey through the glass doors of the treatment room. He hadn't even noticed the 3 of them until they were standing right beside him. "Jay..." Voight placed a hand on Jay's shoulder causing him to snap back into reality "Can you tell us what happened?" he asked sympathetically. "Um..yeah sure" Jay turned to face the group "I don't really know Sarge, she left to go for a run early this morning, and then when I turned my radio on this morning I heard that she had called in a car accident near riverwalk". "So she wasn't in a car at all?" Kim asked Jay "No, no she wasn't" he hesitated. How did she get the gash on her head then? "I really don't even know what happened, maybe she saw the crash and went to help. I can't imagine she'd just jump into the freezing water if she didn't see something" Jay began "It was still when I got there" he continued "then Hailey's shirt floated to the surface and they dived in and pulled her out. She wasn't that deep so she mustn't have been in there long". "Ok and the two cars that were in the water?" Voight looked to Jay. "One car had a mother and a a baby in there, and the other car was empty" Jay told him. "But it looked like the two had collided?" Voight questioned "It sure seems that way" Jay uttered. "OK so let's head down to the scene and see if we can find out exactly what happened, if this was some kind of rip we need to handle it quickly" Voight said to all of them.

The door to the treatment room opened, catching everyone's attention. It was Will. "Jay, she's waking up, you can come in and see her" Jay looked to Voight for confirmation that they were done talking. "Sarge I've gotta stay with her" he said desperately. "I didn't expect you to join us" Voight replied "go be with her, we've got this". Jay rushed into Hailey's room, sitting down on the chair next to the bed and taking her hand. She looked over and smiled at him. "You really scared me" he said.
