It is said that after the arrival of Britishers the temples were captured and the system changed – the women had no other choice but to practice prostitution, this is how the system changed.
This theory however, is not entirely true.
Because the system prevailed from the, medieval ages and was corrupted way before the Britishers intervened, some documents say the system was never holy as was always the way it is now.
Devadasi, the word itself means slave of God.
But in this case, they were actually slaves to the representatives of God.
The so-called Hindu 'Godmen' took advantage of these women, because these men had high status the women could do nothing.
Also, if they did try to do something, they were the ones who would be shamed and would lose their status – This was the reason they never came out .
But as history always says – The truth never remains hidden.
