It was around one in the morning when Paul heard the noise. He was generally a pretty heavy sleeper when he was actually able to fall asleep but he'd been up late trying to find an ounce of serotonin in old YouTube videos he'd watched when he was a teenager. That's when he heard the footsteps on top of the house. Paul sighed to himself. "Vincent." This had become about a monthly occurrence, where Vincent would climb onto the slanted roof from the balcony at any random time of day. The first time Paul had just been leaving the house to go get groceries when he'd heard "HEY PAUL CATCH THE TURPENTINE" before a tube of yellow paint hit him in the head. He'd looked up to find his roommate standing on the roof with paint tubes in his pockets and a brush and canvas in his hands. "VINCENT WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU ON THE ROOF?!?!?" Instead of answering Paul, Vincent pointed out into the distance and smiled. "HEY PAUL! I CAN SEE A BIRD OVER THERE!!" Vincent yelled excitedly. Paul just put his head in his hands and sighed a long, hard, sigh. He did the same thing now as he rolled out of bed and trudged out to the balcony, mumbling to himself about writing to Theo and telling him that he was done being Vincent's roommate. As he hoisted himself up to the roof, Vincent turned to greet him. "Hey Paul" he said softly. Paul sat down next to Vincent and sighed. "It's a nice night out here huh? I'm glad you came to join me." Vincent said to his roommate. "What are you doing up here Vince?" Paul asked gently, sensing the calm and genuine tone of Vincent's voice. "Stargazing" Vincent replied, looking up in awe of the stars. "Aren't they wonderful Paul? So many bright, glittering beams of pure cosmic dust. I wonder where they come from? I know that really they're just space chemicals floating around up there but, I think they're too pretty to be just that. I think there's more to the stars, y'know?" Paul chuckled softly and looked up. "You've got a point there bud" He said, taking in the vast landscape of stars. Vincent smiled softly. "Somehow, seeing the stars always makes me feel better about things. It really puts things into perspective. Because no matter what happens the stars will still be there, shining above." "Until they explode and die" Paul thought. But, he didn't say that. Instead he wrapped an arm around his friend and the two of them just sat there together. Maybe Paul didn't need to write to Theo after all.
