Billy raised an eyebrow as Mama Gertrude pulled up to a small grocery store, a hungry look in her deep green eyes. “Uh, Mama Gertrude? Why are we at the store?” Billy asked, holding a squirming Sally on his lap.

“I need to get something…” Mama Gertrude mumbled, and swung open her door. “Stay here you three, Mama will be right back.” Billy nodded, and Sally snapped a salute. Spencer played deaf.

Mama Gertrude slammed her door shut and shuffled up to the grocery store’s automatic doors. As the foggy glass doors slid closed behind her, Spencer finally glanced up from his game.

“What’s Gertrude doing?” Spencer lisped, spitting all over his Nintendo screen. He pulled his sleeve over his hand and wiped his tiny screen clean. Billy shrugged and Sally began to sing her Freddy song.

Billy sighed and looked out the window. His eyes grew wide and he hastily tried to unbuckle Sally and himself, since they were sharing a seat. Spencer glanced over to the frantic Billy and raised a skeptical eyebrow.

“What are you doing?” Spencer asked, pausing his game. Billy finally got the seat belt unbuckled, and he swiftly jumped into the driver’s seat.

“Billy! BILLY!” A girl’s perky voice sang, and Billy began sweating. He reached to turn the the keys in the ignition, but they weren't there.

“NO, Maddie Friend!” Billy cried, rolling up the open driver’s window as a girl with short brown hair tied into a ponytail came skipping towards the truck. Her green eyes sparkled with joy as she caught sight of her beloved Billy.

Billy hastily locked both of the doors as Maddie came up to his, and waited. Billy was confused, usually she would try to get to him, force her way into the car or something like that. Now she just, stood there.

Sally gave a little smile and crawled over Billy and unlocked the door. Billy curled into a ball and turned away from the door, scared of what Maddie might do. He flinched as the door opened, and there was a polite tap on his shoulder.

Billy slowly opened one eye and saw Maddie standing in front of the open truck door, her hands held shyly behind her back. “H-hi Billy.” Billy straightened his back, but continued hugging his knees.

Maddie cleared her throat a bit, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. Now that she wasn’t chasing after Billy, he noticed how pretty she actually was. “U-um, I’m sorry.”

Sally nudged Maddie’s arm, signaling for her to continue. “I-I’m sorry I’ve been so clingy and annoying.” Maddie stared at the ground and kicked a rock with her shoe.

With a small spark of courage, Billy put his feet back on the floor. “That’s okay Maddie Friend. I forgive you.” Maddie lifted her head again, a radiant smile on her face, and she reached forward, hugging Billy tightly.

“That makes me so happy, thank you Billy.” Maddie whispered, nuzzling his shoulder. Billy blushed and patted her on the back, glancing at Sally, who was smirking her face off.

“MADISON!” Yelled the angry voice of a man, and Maddie jumped backwards in fright. A tall man with golden brown hair and a scruffy face came stomping towards Maddie and he grabbed her arm roughly.

“What do think you’re doing!? I told you not to leave the house young lady!” The man snarled angrily, and Maddie cringed away from him.

“S-sorry daddy! I w-won’t do it again!” Maddie stammered, and Billy jumped out of the family truck.

“Hey! Leave her alone! You big jerk!” Billy shouted, trying to pull Maddie’s father away from his friend. Maddie’s father growled low in his throat, and punched Billy right in the nose.
