Violent, loud, heavy: the rain hammered roughly on him like it was sending millions of tiny needles into his body as he ran. Footsteps echoed behind him as he was being chased. Chased by those he wanted to call friends. The shouts danced in his pointed ears. He ran. He ran as fast as he could in his weak, fragile body. The voices became fainter and fainter as he ran towards the forest. His muscles burned with exhaustion as he slowed to a stop. He hid behind a large boulder looking at the silver ring on his hand in sorrow. He sighed, remembering the promise he made all those years ago to himself.
The sun shone brightly on the town as the children ran freely. He stood in the shadows, watching. Watching the bliss light up each of their faces. His own, converting to one of envy. A sad smile slit across his face, two sharp fangs protruding out of his mouth. His pale skin glistened as a singular tear rolled down his perfectly sculpted face. He looked down at his porcelain-white hand, his silver ring still shimmering despite being shrouded in darkness. He sighed before speaking quietly to himself, "I vow to one day reunite both humans and monsters no matter the cost in which I may have to pay."
That was fifty-seven years ago. It has yet to be fulfilled.
His head jerked upwards as he heard a pair of young, child-like voices approaching him from, as his pointed gathered, around fifty metres away. If he had a beating heart, it would be echoing in his ears. Despite not needing to, he took a deep breath, successfully calming his nerves before standing; tall and proud. His pale skin glistened, highlighted under the moonlight, unlike the dark cloak that wrapped around his torso and draped behind him. The innocent faces peeked from between the trees. The rain continued to fall around them all. He approached them slowly. Their breathing hitched as he got closer; his hand reaching up. They clenched their eyes shut and held one-and-other tightly. Something covered them. Dubiously, they opened their eyes to see the inhuman man standing far away from them once again. However, this time, without his large, black cloak. Curious, they looked down at themselves to see the missing article of clothing protecting them from the cold air and rough rain.
Loud voices boomed, getting closer to the trio as the seconds passed. Fear danced in his eyes as he looked down from the children to his ring. The rain began to slow as though it knew he wanted to see them: the Hunters. All of a sudden, his balance faltered as two miniature bodies collided with his slender frame. Looking down, he saw the two children staring up at him, their eyes filled with adoration and care. Protect. That is what they want to do for him and what he wants to do for them. Filled with a new strength, they removed their arms from around him to turn and face those who they grew up with. People began to break from the treeline. They stared. At the man; the creature. At the children; their kind. They stared at two of their children protecting the monster. Hesitantly, they lowered their weapons at seeing the protectiveness within the children's eyes and the fear and protection in the other-worldly being. They dropped their weapons and walked cautiously towards the three. Suddenly, his ring glowed, emitting a bright light. He looked down at it and smiled.
His promise was fulfilled . . .
